New Haven's traffic "management" system has trained motorists to devise workarounds for the chronically malfunctioning traffic signals. The technology to make the lights work properly has been available for over twenty years yet for reasons unbeknownst to me, there's no appetite to find a permanent solution. Things will become increasingly hazardous for all users of the roads as dedicated bicycle lanes are added with those users selecting which rules of the road to abide by and which are too inconvenient (stopping for a stop sign going uphill for example) It is a frustrating free for all and makes navigating the city beyond unpleasant. So instead of fixing the cause of the problems we're asking already overburdened police officers to babysit intersections. Maybe I expect too much. Take a drive from one end of the city to the other and really pay attention to how the traffic signals are working and compare that experience with a similar ride through a municipality with properly functioning and coordinated systems.

I nominate Paul N for head of Dept of Traffic, Transport and Parking. He seems to have common sense when it comes to navigating New Haven.
