I am confused and concerned about the new obstacle course on Chapel. It seems to be a major hazard, especially for 1. cars at night not seeing the obstacles, and 2. pedestrians who might stand on the corner of the sidewalk that now juts into the main roadway. I regularly walk with my young children this way, and will now be hesitant to do so. This seems like an expensive setup to maintain (and plow!) and not the only possible way to deal with speeding. I hope no more of these will be installed.

I could not agree more. Instead of devoting resources to finding a permanent solution to the chronically malfunctioning traffic signals throughout the city, we continue to develop imaginative "solutions" which serve no purpose. It will be interesting to see how Edgewood functions with the new bike route. We've all seen the bumper stickers with images of bicycles and motorcycles urging us to "share the road". The part that's missing is "share the rules" (i.e. stop signs, traffic signals and not overtaking on the right vehicles lawfully waiting for the red light to change).

Actually studies show the opposite, Paul and OP. This is not an obstacle course, per se, but rather a traffic calming measure. It visually narrows the road and causes drivers to have to slow down and pay more attention; this is a good thing. Studies show that traffic calming measure like these are more effective than adding additional stop signs and/or traffic light changes. There are lots of great traffic calming studies available online if you'd like to have a read yourself. Check it out!

I live close to the corner of Alden and Chapel streets. Having watched with increasing frustration over 17 years as cars roared down/up Chapel street, I'm thrilled that the city made the investment in our neighborhood. From my vantage point, the "obstacle course" is working. Drivers are paying attention and slowing down. I'm also impressed by the quality and design of the installation. Thank you to the city engineering department for a job well done.

"Traffic calming" is Agenda2030-speak. It is meant to throttle drivers for the War on Cars, with the eventual goal being to force everyone out of cars and onto mass transit or bicycles.

Dearest Agenda, if "throttling" drivers is what it takes to reduce their illegal and unsafe speeding, then so be it. Motor vehicles are not the only users of our roads but they are potentially the most dangerous because of their speed capabilities and its devastating potential. Making the roads safe and usable for everyone also makes neighborhoods safer. Perhaps you should study more progressive cities that are already reaping the economic benefits of improved and shared roadways--they still have cars, even!

As someone who lives on this corner, I am profoundly grateful for the new installation. You know those signs "Drive like your kids live here"? Mine does, as does my grandchild. I am profoundly tired of the more-than-weekly crashes in front of my house. This is not a "War on Cars," it's a war on bombing down my street at double the speed limit.

Ran by them last night. They're still "bombing at double the speed limit." Interesting to see them do "the weave" while doing it. Are we taking bets on how long until the first major crash into the bump outs? My pick is this weekend.

Last night (10/14/16), a driver drove right into the middle of the island, not seeing it at all and getting stuck on it. Unknown if he was an impaired driver.

While traffic calming is good for this area, the city has not designed these islands well and they are very hard to see without reflective materials.

The islands need to be more visible.

I drive chapel 2x a day on the way to work/preschool. I agree that better reflectors need to be added, however, the average speed has reduced 5-10mph and i've experienced less tailgating on the road since installation. The pedestrian bump-outs are meant to keep you safer when crossing the road.

I have pictures of these islands after SCF issue 2999512 was reported in which a driver actually got stuck on one of these islands. I will post them to the Agenda 2030 in CT facebook page. Traffic safety, indeed!
