My guess is that the City of St. Charles Board of Adjustment probably granted a variance for the sign. If they did, it was a mistake. I totally agree that the backlit signage is inappropriate for Historic Main Street, and the landscaping is also extremely sparse and bare for such a high-profile project. The site rehab is great, but it did not turn out to be a high-quality project. You can tell by looking at the site that they skimped on building materials and landscaping. It needs more investment in aesthetics. Who at the City can provide answers and get the owner to invest properly in making the property fit the historic district standards?

The sign is approved attend the Historical Landmarks Board meeting. They are monthly. The board approved the sign years ago. A day late and a whiner short.
There is nothing wrong with pointing out mistakes, even after appointed board members made their decision. I figured one of the boards approved the sign when I fist saw this post, but I still commented because I agree that the sign looks out of place with the aesthetics on Main Street.
I would rather read posts with legitimate concerns and considerate points of view versus recurring sarcastic put downs reminiscent of junior high.
An investigation of this issue has been completed. No violation was found and for more questions or concerns, please contact the City of St. Charles Community Development Department at (636)-949-3222.
