I have seen this many a night after closing down the street. They like the sewer drain on the church side of the corner

Yes, please address this situation! It's disgusting. As soon as it's dusk each evening, you can see several scurrying along the curb and climbing into the trash can. They are huge and completely unfazed by human activity.

Town Green has brought this issue to the attention of the City and the City will be abating the corner of Church and Chapel Street to get rid of this problem.

They're definitely not gone. In fact, there seem to be more than ever before. I counted 13 of them on Tuesday night. They like the trash can outside of Starbucks, but they LOVE the trash from Buffalo Wild Wings. BWW hasn't helped this issue. They rarely close the lids on their trash containers and frequently leave trash bags on the ground next to the containers. Rat heaven!

Yes, I spoke too soon. The trash can was removed, but the recycling can is now being used as a trash can, and every night the rats can be seen at the bottom of it. Last night one left the trash can and went down into a hole/crack in the sidewalk. The crack has gotten worse since the original trash can was removed. This is all outside the Starbucks, and is happening as early as 8-8:30, when Starbucks is still open. It's a public health problem, especially with summer coming, and given that this is one of the busiest corners in New Haven, it should be addressed. Thank you.

This issue has been acknowledged and supposedly flagged for abatement, but the problem seems worse than ever. Moving the trashcan at this corner <> abatement.

The rats seem emboldened by the barricades that were just placed at this corner for road work. I stopped counting at 20 rats last night. Please address this rather disgusting problem!

The rats are especially bad right now because the underground vault they have been living in and the sidewalk that covers their tunnels has been dug up (hence the bbarricades on Church street) and is being fixed. The hope is that with abatement and fixing the water problem on that corner it will alleviate the rats as well as the sinking storm drains and sink holes we have been getting in the roadway. We hope it will be fixed very soon.
