Litter is a problem everywhere in the city and I see folks throw rubbish out their car window without shame. It would be nice if Goffe and Ella Grasso were better maintained in this area. It would also be nice if the neighborhood alderman had some kind of presence in the actual neighborhood and on this message board.

I agree with that, everyday I come out of my driveway. I have to pick up trash that has been tossed out of car windows. McDonald bags, beer bottles, soda cups, everything. that would bring awareness to the neighborhood.

I respectfully disagree. Signs have absolutely no effect. Just check out the litter along the north side of Edgewood Park on Edgewood Avenue where "Do Not Litter Signs" have been posted for years.

These folks are more concerned with the cleanliness of the interior of their cars than the space we share.

It's unfortunate but we responsible citizens are going to have to continue to clean up after the pigs.

Perhaps early education might work but with all the schools have on their plates now I hesitate to add one more responsibility.

I tend to agree with "Me" that signs won't help. The people who throw trash from their car and as they walk along sidewalks know that it is rude/illegal/inappropriate/etc but just don't care. I doubt reminders will make a difference. I do wonder about responsibility for cleaning up the trash. Is it homeowners or the City? Or some combination depending on whether it's the trash in the gutter or the greenbelt or the sidewalk? But I certainly agree that the amount of trash along Goffe Ter, particularly between Colony and the Ella Grasso Blvd is absolutely disgusting. It's also been accumulating there for quite some time without any signs of any clean-up. I know this is the case along many other New Haven streets.

Agree that litter is a problem throughout the city; it is a daily occurrence for me to pick up some form of trash in front of my house everyday but I am happy to say that it has gotten to be much less than it used to be because I think people finally appreciate the fact that I'm trying to keep my house and curb neat. That's not to say that I don't sometimes come out in the morning to find a pull plate or bag of food thrown out in the street or on my tree belt...

Signage would be nice but it's the behavior that has to change and I'm not sure how a sign does that but it may be worth looking into. I agree too with Paula that it would be great to see our alders here being aware of and taking part in the conversations. We need to make that happen!

What kind of trash do you find? I usually find soft drink containers, fast food packaging, wrappers for cheap cigars, and the occasional drug baggie.

@Paula Harp I find the same things you do, along with the occasional broken toys, fast food napkins... I've even occasionally found an unactivated bank debit card, and many potato chip and junk food wrappers.

I found a tampon yesterday, a new one for my corner. I find a lot of liquor bottles and sometimes baby diapers. I saw a sign in Derby this weekend on 34 that said Litter Fines $219. Why can't we have something like this. Maybe a fine will deter people. Of course, it will have to be enforced and not ignored.

YIKES @Concerned Citizen, but I neglected to mention that I've found a used condom curbside on one occasion and sometimes baby diapers as well. I would love to get an anti-litter sign put up on my street and would happily volunteer two locations: one in the tree belt on the one way side of Whalley & Winthrop for the corner store, package store and Island Spice restaurant patrons, and the other on Percival where there ALWAYS seems to be trash and broken glass strewn about the street.
