Just today, I had bought a beverage from the convenience store on Temple Street downtown, and headed on over to the green to eat my lunch out in the beautiful day. When I was finished, I scanned the area on the street for a place to recycle my empty bottle, realizing that recycling wasn't possible.

My idea is that Public Works should estimate the percentage of trash that is bottles and cans around that area, that can be recycled. If the amount is great enough, perhaps a study for a design for new recycling bins downtown should be produced.

Please vote on the issue!

I have thought this for years now! However I think many of the cans and bottles get picked out by some members of the community for the money. It’s an odd inefficient way of having a recycling program if you ask me. If there was one on the green or downtown it would be a magnet for people to come and "take" them out of the bin. As long as they get recycled though it doesn’t matter me who does it.

This is a great idea! Probably really easy to do and they could be a cool looking green color. I work at Yale and for some reason we do not have recycling containers around our building anymore but as a group we try together to recycle.

This is a good idea. Even if some members of the community are picking them out to get the 5 cents back that's fine. Either way they still get recycled.

Town Green, Dept of Public Works and Office of Sustainability are going to start a pilot recycling program on Chapel Street in the next month. We all acknowledge recycling is the greener, more responsible way to deal with rubbish and we're working to get there. Look for the Green bins at the bus stop and across the street at starbucks soon!!!

why not a temporary solution in the meantime:
the blue recycling bins used residentially placed next to a handful of garbage cans?

they have added a few green metal receptacles by a few of the garbage ones downtown.

I agree. This drives me nuts. NYC has separate trash, so does Berlin. Let's get w/ the program. It would really only create revenue for the city anyway, at 5 cents a bottle.

The three recycling receptacles at the corners of (a) Church and Chapel by Starbucks, and (b)/(c) on both sides of the CTTransit transfer station are a pilot to test the success of the program.

The issue with putting recycling bins downtown is concern about public dumping. Town Green did a trial with recycling receptacles on the Green and I'm not sure exactly what the results were, but it did not encourage them to expand the program. We do need more recycling downtown, though.
