Description

Many condo unit owners here at the Warrenton Mill in Torrington are unpleasantly surprised that someone has publicly listed our private condominium as low-income housing, welfare apartments, Section 8 apartments, etc. in the online Yellow Pages. There's also a website link next to the listing of "Warrenton Mill Association" that when clicked takes you to our property management company's website. When we owners bought our condos here, we probably never thought we'd be listed as a low-end property or even as "apartments". We certainly are NOT either, though someone has apparently seen fit to advertise our private condominium in this manner. We have asked our condo board and property manager to promptly resolve this issue, and we believe they will. This sort of "advertising" can discourage potential condo buyers, who would be missing out on visiting a unique and impressive property -- one that's listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Are other Torrington condos being advertised as low-income? I have seen no other private condominiums in our city treated this way. So, shame on whoever is responsible. I believe we're definitely one of the better condominiums in the area, and we certainly don't deserve this.

As a homeowner at the Mill, I can assure people that it is not low income housing. (Our condo fees are among the highest in the region!) I agree with the initial poster that it's unfair and too bad that someone on high, and I assume within the Warrenton Mill organization, has positioned the condo community in such an unflattering light in the YellowPages and on Facebook. I hope we can get to the bottom of this and get these inaccurate public references to "low income housing" removed -- and swiftly so. The Mill is actually a great place to live -- especially since Tent City was disbanded and moved from the woods behind our property. The architecture at the Mill is gorgeous, and there's something about living in a historically-significant structure that is just plain, well, cool. My neighbors are educated, interesting and interested, and I have noticed people are starting to reach out to each other more and make the Warrenton Mill more of a true community. It's a great place for artists and other creative types to purchase a home. Even New Yorkers who want a Litchfield County "crash pad" where they can land on holidays and weekends -- without investing in a house and all of the upkeep that goes with that -- are starting to call the Mill "home." So, no, we're certainly not a public housing project. I'm sure there are some residents who are subsidized, but there is no need for those in charge of managing the mill to blatantly position the community as low income. Wow. I hope we can get to the bottom of this and resolve it quickly.

So I'll just add this edit to my comment via another comment: I have absolutely no idea who is responsible for advertising the Mill as low income in the YellowPages. One would suspect it's those in charge; however, I don't want to arbitrarily say it's those managing the Mill, because it could be a lone homeowner trying to rent out their condo who simply didn't think much about it. But we do need to get to the bottom of this issue and correct it. Maybe establish some guidelines for the future. And by the way, the Mill truly is a great place to live!

This has to be a mistake. Afterall, the WMCA Board is supposed to take careful consideration in getting votes from owners before making big decisions like this that would effect everyone here and everyone's property value, like turning this into Section 8 housing. At our last meeting, when this Section 8 advertising matter was brought up, the Board President said she'd take care of this, as she too believed it to be a mistake. Please fix it! Several owners of the Mill are COMMITTED to keeping property values up and the place pretty, and doing whatever it takes to do so. This is a lovely place, great architecture, that unfortunately has been neglected a little bit in recent years with the Board's priorities being off, but owners would never have voted in favor of something like this.

I hope more owners will weigh in on this outrageous situation. Regardless of who's responsible, the law says the association and its board must maintain, repair and replace elements of a condominium's common areas. The rationale for that particular Connecticut General Statute is it would be unfair to all owners if their property values were to suffer due to a lack of diligent oversight and management of the property in general. By the same token, I believe it is our leadership's responsibility to promptly address anything that would likely lead to the devaluation of our condo units (in this case blatantly erroneous advertising). Consequently, if our board and property manager fail to address this matter expeditiously, I would be very concerned (and frankly very surprised). Perhaps at the next owners' meeting (on the 25th) we will learn that this outrageous and, I believe, malicious advertising will have been removed from the Yellow Pages and anywhere else it appears. That said, I believe the Mill's leadership will act swiftly and assertively on this matter. Ironically, during the spring season, when the Mill grounds look so great and real estate activity is at a peak, we find ourselves being undermined by what I believe may well be a prankster with a vile sense of humor.

I have been an owner at the Mill for the better part of a decade. In this time I have had nothing but compliments on my condo, inside and out. With that being said, it's very surprising and disturbing to hear news that we would be listed as low-income apartments. I really hope that this mistake is handled promptly as there is nothing low-income about myself, my condo, or the friendly neighbors at the Mill.

As mentioned by the poster above, the Warrenton Mill Condominium should not be mistakenly listed as low-income apartments when they are just the opposite. To see what I mean, visit enter: "www.warrentonmillcondo.com" in your search engine. Ironically, despite the facts reported here, it seems certain people are now doubling down on promoting a false image of the Mill, using various free forms of advertising on the Internet -- and we owners don't know why, nor can we get to the bottom of (or resolve) what amounts to malicious libel. I hope you will visit our condominium's website, referred to earlier in this post. We are not low-income apartments as certain troublemakers would have people believe. Nor is there any vestige of the tent city that used to exist near our complex. The media has reported the fact that it was removed by the city's authorities with the help of social agencies, but certain individuals continue to misuse the Internet to perpetuate the falsity that the tent city remains.

I hope I'm not coming across as promoting the Mill. I just want to counter the negativity some malicious person has been putting out there. I invite anyone interested in the Mill to drop by to see it for themselves. With the downtown revitalization, removal of tent city and ongoing improvements to the property, it's definitely worth a look. Loft units -- with high ceilings and lots of natural light -- appeal to some people, and I know of no other loft condos in the area. Plus the prices are remarkably reasonable for what you get. Personally, I don't think it has bothered her enough, or maybe she has tried to address the situation but didn't tell us about it. What's needed to correct what amounts to online vandalism is an "online reputation cleanup" -- which is hardly rocket science and hardly a secret. This should have been done effectively and thoroughly by now, especially since there are services out there that will get the job done for a reasonable fee. For condo owners, it's both discouraging and demoralizing for a good condominium like ours to be denigrated online by some sicko who apparently takes joy in practicing libel. It's also disheartening that it seems nothing has been done about it in terms of an "online reputation cleanup" and identifying the individual responsible for unfairly attacking the Warrenton Mill. Any prospective buyer who does an online search of Warrenton Mill will get a list of disparaging items, which are enough to dissuade them from the truth and checking this place out. The nearby tent city has been gone for quite some time. We are not a federal housing project (how totally absurd that a private condominium would be listed as such). I could go on about this injustice and the failure to effectively address it, but this is my last post here. I'll close this out in a few weeks, if no one has anything to add.
