Through workshops, planning studies, etc. residents have long supported the need for SAFE pedestrian crossings on Oberlin. If we want a walkable community, and to encourage people to leave cars at home, we MUST give pedestrians some advantage over cars to cross the street. Please, COR, get busy and give pedestrians safe crossings on Oberlin. now.

This is an issue at Smallwood & Oberlin too. Have been almost hit several times with cars turning onto Smallwood and not looking out for pedestrians. Particularly with the construction near there, cars speed around one another when traffic is busy where it cuts down to 1 lane and often turn without looking. I have also seen 2-3 cars fly across Oberlin from the bank parking lot through a red light. Not sure how to fix it, but pedestrian safety is definitely a concern since I often walk Cameron Village with my 2 kids.

On April 18, 2016, I was crossing Cameron Street (from the HT side to the McDonalds side) with a crosswalk signal and traffic greens for Oberlin. A GoRaleigh Bus (CAT bus 1291) on route 16 didn't stop for the red light, and immediately turned right, I was literally able to touch the bus it was so close. I called CAT and have yet to hear back from them. I very much agree that the crosswalks need more time or STOP HERE with arrows signs pointing back to maybe help.

They should have a right turn yield to pedestrians on a pole in front of mcdonalds side or a hanging left turn yield to pedestrians hanging by the oberlin light for left turns- they have these over at NC State on Western.

Since I opened this, my husband and I have almost been hit by turning cars twice. The first one was turning left and drove straight at us so we had to jump and run out of the way to avoid being hit. I don't think he ever saw us!

The second time happened today with a car turning right. We were crossing the street in front of her car when she started driving into us. My husband was directly in front of the car and had to hop with it with his hands on the hood! The woman was not even looking for pedestrians, just waiting for her chance to turn right on red.

I hate walking around Cameron Village. People drive way too fast through it and around it and making turns into streets or parking lots without looking for us because traffic is so heavy there now so they are focused on traffic and not pedestrians.

Can't we at least have some signs like the comment from Jonathan? Maybe traffic calming devices.

City of Raleigh, what's your response? It's dark at rush hour now and this area has more pedestrians than ever.

SUGGESTION: how about using the same methods & signage at Oberlin & Clark as are deployed at Western Boulevard and Avent Ferry Road (next to NCSU)? At Western/Avent Ferry, there are yield to pedestrian signs AND a no-left-turn off Avent Ferry, with a $250 penalty posted.

CHEAPER SUGGESTION: Post those yield-to-pedestrian sign

A simple fix for part would be to not allow right turns on red through busy areas of Cameron Village since most issues I see are cars looking left for traffic and turning right on red without looking to the right for pedestrians - they are just keeping an eye to their left to ensure cars aren't coming as they enter the turn.
