I think this has been missing for quite a while, and I believe there are some folks researching the text of the plaque so that they can replace it. Ranger Harry would know.
Don't know what year it got stolen (and undoubtedly melted down for scrap, like other plaques around town) but it's been gone since some time before 2010 when I started coming through there. If it's ever replaced, use some material the scrappers don't want, like concrete.
The plaque is missing for the soldier from the Spanish-American War. The original text for the plaque seems to be missing, too. The Parks Dept. has been willing to replace the plaque. Friends of Edgewood Park has been working with Parks on it.
A number of missing historic markers in New Haven have been reported on SeeClickFix. I wonder if there is some way to categorize these on SeeClickFix to get a list of all the missing plaques in one place? Also it would be great to send an automatic alert to local scrap dealers when a missing plaque is reported on SCF.
I want to recommend that if you have a historic plaque in your neighborhood, make sure that it is included in the Historical Marker Database (http://www.hmdb.org/). That way we have a record for where and when historic markers go missing and what the text of the original plaque was.
We are trying to delineate issues that are current and need the city's attention to resolve. Any issues prior to 2013 are being closed. If your issue remains and needs to be addressed by the city, please either re-open or open as a new See Click Fix issue. Thanks.
