Guess they're not doing a great job then. Need more than street sweeping.

If everyone picked up in front of their building or residence daily that would help. Hard to get people to change their just drop trash wherever they are habits. It is a proven fact that if the trash is picked up daily it helps to deter people from dropping more trash.

It's hard to concern yourself with trash and appearances, when there are more important things like trying to survive. But for the businesses, and the morale of many of the people who live and work there, it does impact their survival.

More definitely needs to be done on Whalley Avenue to make it more business and pedestrian friendly and it starts with cleaning it up! We need to fine business owners who don't keep the front of their businesses clean or have blighted properties and we need to hold the Whalley Avenue Special Services District more accountable for what they are doing to make Whalley Avenue better. I live right off of Whalley so I know what is and isn't being done and am trying to do what I can to change that. I am a member of the Main Street committee for Whalley Avenue and we are working in conjunction with the City to try and get money and attention paid to Whalley Avenue between Broadway and Fitch.

Great! Glad to hear this... Live out of the area but come to NH often and usually stay at the Marriott and visit Whalley businesses.

Good luck getting the city to respond. 2 weeks ago I pulled down more than 30 signs that were posted illegally in the Edgewood section of the City. Most of the signs were along Whalley Ave. Photo's attached. I emailed the DPW, LCI, and the Mayor's office asking what would be done to the people posting the signs. No response. I've followed up twice and still no response. So, I'm left to conclude that the City simply doesn't care

Thank you so much for gathering those predatory lending signs Dennis! We are going to need to keep the pressure on the City and those who can do something about this until our concerns are addressed. LCI is extremely overwhelmed and understaffed right now so don't expect much from them; they STILL haven't replaced our neighborhood specialist yet and it's been almost a year!

Nadine: Evan Trachten has been assigned to WEB/Westville/Whalley Ave. area for LCI. I don't have his direct number but he can be reached via the main office I would gather.

Side comment: Whalley between Winthrop & Sherman has that double/triple-wide sidewalk on the southern side of the street. It seems like an ideal place for outdoor markets during the warmer months, as it's otherwise basically wasted space. Such a thing could increase foot traffic in a good way.

Hi Andy, thanks so much for the head's up, no one told us anything so I will be sure to get that info out! There are many of us who feel the exact same way and would love to see a weekday or weekend farmer's market take place here. This is something we plan to work on with the WEB mgmt. team for next year. If you'd like to help with that, please let me know as we will need support from the community to get this done.

It cost the Upper State Street Association about $12,000/year to provide similar service a few years back. The key was leveraging a sub-contract with Town Green SSD.

Whalley Avenue Special Services District has a contract with Marrakech to clean up the Avenue between Broadway and I believe Pendleton St. I think we need to find out exactly how many times a week this service is being performed and maybe concentrate on specific blocks where the trash is the most problematic and have them focus there a few times a week and then maybe once a week on the whole stretch they cover. Or they could just increase the contract, but I don't know how much the contract is; good question to ask...
