Can you provide more specific info on location? So you are aware, sidewalks cannot be cracked, as it will not provide a good foundation for a bike rack install.

We've actually had two bikes stolen on two separate occasions in the past week from here - the thieves unscrewed the street signs from their poles and lifted the bikes over the top. So proper bike racks are more needed - and would be more appreciated - than ever.

I'm not sure I understand the sidewalk cracking issue - does this mean they can only be installed when sidewalks themselves are redone, or is there a way to install them without cracking the sidewalk? I'm happy to send photos of the pavement if that is helpful.

If a bike rack can't be put on Chestnut directly, what about bike racks at Lenzi Park or near the school parking lot at the corner of Chestnut and Greene? Or will that leave the bikes too secluded and potentially prone to theft as well? Just an idea.

Thanks very much to the Dpt of Transport for looking into this. These racks are very needed. Not only have there been two thefts but another bike attached to a street pole was hit by a car.

Although you can lock you bike to a sign pole, it is not recommended for any great length of time, due to the issues mentioned above, such as removal of the pole itself. Also, bikes should not be locked to handicap signs, as it may impede upon the ability for someone in a wheelchair to maneuver from their vehicle to the sidewalk and vice versa. Regarding sidewalks, if the sidewalk is not a solid slab, we would not have a solid base to properly install a bike rack. It could become loose as the sidewalk shifts due to expansion and contraction.

We will take a look at Chesnut St to see where best a rack can be installed and follow up.
