Credit the police unions who have done a stellar job keeping the law in place which requires this featherbedding. My experience is that having cops present makes the situation more dangerous; especially when they try to direct traffic. The most galling had to be the day a cop stood outside my house for 8 hours while some minor street repair was done. My street is very quiet. I would be surprised if twenty cars passed the entire day. It's a joke and it does cost us.

Nothing beats the cop who was assigned to "guard" the construction of the new LLBean building. Because the building being constructed is right up against the street and traffic at that location is congested there is no place for him to stand safely so there he is about a block away at the corner of Broadway and York "guarding".
