An u-n-s-o-l-v-a-b-l-e problem of filth on the once proud but now abandoned New Haven Green.
The city, the citizens, the institutions, the heavily overburdened taxpayers have thrown in the towel and given the Green up to squalor, human waste, trash. And the beauty and wide community enjoyment of the Green is never coming back.
And on Thursday, a lovely early summer day, near lunchtime, a grown man, shirtless and disheveled, unzipped his pants, unbuckled his belt, and urinated into the fountain.
And the reaction? There was none. Because we've given the Green over to this, and now such is normal.

The Parks Department has assigned dedicated staff to the Green to help maintain the amount of litter and trash that is frequently disposed there. With the Green being a location that is constantly used we do our best to keep it in a condition that we all can be proud of. We ask for the communities understanding as this is an ongoing issue in which can be difficult at times but we will continue to do our best. We appreciate your input as it gives us a better idea as to the wants and needs of the community. As always any advice is greatly appreciated.

I walked through The Green last night around 8 and it was embarrassing how much trash covered the lawn... An absolute mess, even around the church.

I walk the Green at least one a week in the afternoon and it is completely taken over by people sleeping on benches, smoking weed, homeless people with their belongs sleeping under trees, and trash everywhere! Funny how the Parks Department can get the Green looking lovely when there is an event like Arts & Ideas or a concert, but once that is over it's like a free for all where any and everyone is allowed to do whatever they want. The Green is the crown jewel for New Haven and the fact that it is being allowed to deteriorate like this is shameful!

I agree with others. The Green has turned into a pretty messy place. I pass through every morning and evening on my way to/from work. It's still a pleasant oasis compared to walking on city streets, but it's become a little hard on the eyes. Lots of trash (esp. cardboard used for sleeping), plus the usual (wrappers, paper, etc.) floating around, and lots of people sitting on benches doing drugs (it's almost inevitable that you'll see a heroin junkie nodding out on at least one bench). Maybe the Proprietors of the Green could be a little more responsible for the property which they OWN.

We are closing older Trash and Recycling issues in order to focus on current ones. Many of the issues reported were resolved by our routine Trash and Recycling Services. Some of the older Trash and Recycling issues were ordinance violations which were responded to by warnings and tickets. If your particular Trash and Recycling issue was not resolved, please open up a new 2019 issue. Thanks.
