I travel this every day, and while it is true some cars do not obey signs (there is no right on red at this intersection), it is important to note that there is no special pedestrian "right of way" either, there are walk/nowalk signs that many ignore. When I turn right onto Whitney from Grove with a green light, the pedestrians crossing Whitney have a specific don't walk sign yet regularly ignore it and jump in front of cars. It is especially difficult in snow conditions when you can't see pedestrians easily. Of course, if the poster is a witness to a car disobeying a red light or sign, ignore my comment.. I just wanted to point out that in this neighborhood, pedestrians also regularly ignore signs/lights. I hope the person is OK.

I am sorry for the person who was hit. Chances are the driver will never take responsibility. Intersections are not the proving grounds for anyone's legal rights. Right-of-way comes with responsibilities. Pedestrians and bikers are always at risk. Case in point: within the last two weeks I was walking a few steps behind someone walking up Temple towards Mason Labs on that side of the street. When he came to Grove, he did not break his gate but continued across Grove with oncoming cars who had a green. He did not look up at the lights, he did not look down Grove for cars. He just walked across Grove and the cars had to slow for him as he was in the middle of the street. No one was speeding. He was lucky—foolishly lucky.

There is no fix for drivers and pedestrians who ignore the other.

I don't disagree that we all have a part to play in keeping our streets safe. That being said, in this case it appears that the pedestrian was in the crosswalk with the right of way during a pedestrian-only signal phase. If that's the case and the driver indeed blew the red light (as I said is an all-too-common occurrence here), then in this case there is absolutely no fault to be found with the pedestrian. It reinforces the message that everybody needs to be vigilant, responsible and respectful of the fact that they’re sharing the road with others.”

No, New Haven (Registered User), you can't just run over a pedestrian; but, as a pedestrian you have the responsibility to keep yourself out of harms way. Do the unexpected and the unexpected will happen.

I walk New Haven streets every day, particularly down Whitney through Grove down to Trumbull. Even though the White walk sign is on, if drivers have the green light and can turn right, they often do so without yielding to pedestrians in the crosswalk. Nevertheless, I also see people willfully ignoring the orange do not walk signs.
You must be vigilant and always, always, watch for cars. Often on Trumbull and Whitney, it's the out of town cars that are confused or impatient.

@ I LoveNH, I think this is my point. I walk the same intersection I drive.
It isn't a big deal to wait 30 sec for the "walk" sign, yet I am amazed by the pedestrians who just walk across. I get laughed at for waiting for the walk sign. When I drive, and I turn right from Grove to Whitney or left from Wall to Whitney, and I wait for the green and the pedestrians have a don't walk, they STILL walk across, don't they know I CAN"T SEE THEM when I start to turn??
However, turning right from Whitney on Trumbal, they have a walk sign, so I know as a car to wait, but some cars don't.
Honestly, the intersections all have clear signage and rules for both cars and walkers. It just requires all to have PATIENCE and just wait their turn.. nothing is so important that it can't wait 30 sec! (same for bikers by the way, VERY confusing for a car or walker to figure out if bikers are following walker signs or car signs, seems to be whichever is quicker for them).

New haven, the point some are making is that pedestrians have laws too, they have green and red lights like traffic does. If someone gets hit crossing on a don't walk sign then they should be responsible for what happens. If the car was in the right why should it be their fault.

@New Haven, I agree, yet understand, especially in when intersections have huge snow banks, it is hard to see walkers. If I am driving, and I have a green light to turn, and I can see pedestrians have a don't walk, then I go ahead and turn. Twice last week I had to slam on brakes when walkers jumped out in front of me, that I couldn't see! (and thus endangering the car behind me as well). Really, again, everyone just slow down, 30 seconds isn't a big deal to wait!!

A couple of updates on this. I'm still trying to get details from the NHPD if indeed a driver was found at-fault here for running a red light and hitting a pedestrian. If so I want to make sure they were ticketed per our new vulnerable user's law. Additionally, I just witnessed yet another car this morning run the light after it was red for a good several seconds--they weren't drifting through the amber--and there were pedestrians moving through the crosswalk during their pedestrian-only signal phase. Dear NHPD, PLEASE get out here and do some traffic enforcement to send a message that we don't tolerate this behavior! Thank you.

I just wanted to add, this might also have to do with the lights at that intersection (Grove/Whitney). I walked across Grove yesterday on Whitney (with a walk sign), went into the bank, got money, went back across Grove with the walk sign, and the same cars were waiting. So the walk light was at least three minutes, meaning cars were waiting upwards of four-five minutes at their red light. No excuse for cars running red lights, but not sure if that is the correct pattern. I'll try checking again at various times and post a SCF.

Thanks for the continuing conversation here folks. "Richtherrn," I know this intersection very well also: I work right nearby. The signal phasing is very consistent: Grove Street heading west (one-way) gets a green light and the sole right of way (Church/Whitney has a red light and the pedestrians have a "Don't Walk" sign), then Grove gets a red light and Church to Whitney heading north (also a one-way) gets the green light and the sole right of way, and then finally--IF a pedestrian presses the crosswalk button--BOTH roadways gets a red light and the pedestrians get a pedestrian-only green "Walk" phase. (The pedestrian-only phase ONLY occurs at that time in the cycle, no matter when the button is pressed: Grove green then Church/Whitney green then Pedestrians green.) I haven't done the timings with a stopwatch. Possibly, "richtherrn," you missed a complete cycle when you went into the bank? I not then I supposed that if you were really quick at the atm you could have made it in and out during that pedestrian-only crossing phase...
