Description

When vehicles travel eastbound on Edgewood Ave., they come to the stop sign at the T-intersection of Park St. Operators look to their left (northbound towards Elm St.) to see if any vehicles are approaching and if it is clear for them to make the right turn. The problem at this location is that the crosswalk for Park St. is south of Edgewood Ave. The operators are looking left while turning right and don’t see the pedestrians in the crosswalk.

Yesterday I was standing at this intersection and watched it happen numerous times. In the past, I have heard NHPD respond to this intersection for a pedestrian struck.

This would actually be a very easy “fix” for the City of New Haven. They could move the crosswalk to the north of Edgewood Ave. The only cost to the city would be the line painting, and they would need a handicapped access ramp for the sidewalk on the east side of the roadway. The crosswalk to the south of Edgewood Ave. would need to be painted or paved over.
