When vehicles travel eastbound on Edgewood Ave., they come to the stop sign at the T-intersection of Park St. Operators look to their left (northbound towards Elm St.) to see if any vehicles are approaching and if it is clear for them to make the right turn. The problem at this location is that the crosswalk for Park St. is south of Edgewood Ave. The operators are looking left while turning right and don’t see the pedestrians in the crosswalk.

Yesterday I was standing at this intersection and watched it happen numerous times. In the past, I have heard NHPD respond to this intersection for a pedestrian struck.

This would actually be a very easy “fix” for the City of New Haven. They could move the crosswalk to the north of Edgewood Ave. The only cost to the city would be the line painting, and they would need a handicapped access ramp for the sidewalk on the east side of the roadway. The crosswalk to the south of Edgewood Ave. would need to be painted or paved over.

There is no in-road pedestrian sign at this busy mid-block crosswalk. This crosswalk is very long and pedestrians have quite a distance to cross. I have not seen the in-road pedestrian signs at other busy mid-block crosswalks elsewhere downtown. For the safety of everyone who uses these mid-block crossing, these should be replaced as soon as possible.
    Thanks very much.

To improve the safety of the mid-block crossing for pedestrian and bicycle traffic, we ask the City of New Haven to implement a mid-block, painted or stamped crosswalk with pedestrian crossing signs and pedestrian-activated flashing signals at 222 York Street directly in front of the University Theatre. In addition, in order to slow traffic approaching this mid-block crossing and to improve pedestrian visibility within this crosswalk, we ask the city to limit parking near this midblock crosswalk directly across from and in front of the theater and to clearly designate no-parking areas on either side of the mid-block crosswalk. Finally, to provide for disability access, curb cuts need to be installed at either end of this crosswalk.

This ticket was opened from a previous one : Issue ID: 2164863
"Intersection used to have a small "yield to pedestrians" sign in the middle of the walkway crossing College. It is now gone, I think to allow easier snow plowing. Now the intersection is extremely dangerous and nearly impossible for pedestrians to cross. There is no other sign and no light, so cars choose to never stop. It was bad enough with the sign, but without it the intersection has become almost uncrossable."

Is this crosswalk, as it is a long one and part of a long block (South Frontage to Congress) be amenable to a solar pedestrian crossing signal like the one in front of Smilow? There are no trees at this intersection (see image)
