Description

During the recent election I discovered that people who used to live in a rental property I own, several of whom have not lived here for years, are still listed as registered voters in New Haven. With a little bit of imagination, it becomes clear that in this city, with such a transient population, it's likely that the statistics re: registered voters/# of such who vote in any given election, etc., will be really inaccurate, which is not a good situation. There must be a way for City Hall to clean up these records. It is important and necessary work, though I'm sure massively tedious; how do we get this done?

A while back I noticed an individual listed at my address (which we've owned for several years now) and I asked them to remove the name, while I was there voting. We had also been receiving election materials in the mail for this person. I assume they did it, because it's now gone, but he could have also filled out the paperwork to change his address on his voter registration information. Other than that, there's not an easy way to have this task accomplished; City Hall can't do callbacks on every voter. The easiest check is when when show up to vote and our license is verified (assuming they check the address and not just the name / photo).

That doesnt work either, thanks to the DMV. When we change addresses by phone or online, they simply send you a plain white strip to slap on the back of your license and handwrite your own address on it. Lame and not "fact".

For one,having a bloated voting list makes it appear that the small turnouts are due to voter apathy.
It's not,the people are just not there,it's a smaller city than the powers would have Hartford believe

I deliver mail in New Haven. You should see how much voter mail goes to fake addresses and imaginary people. Voter fraud is rampant in New Haven

When i lived in New Haven i had a big box full of mail that was relentlessly sent to the address,people who have not lived there in 10 yrs - and mail for people who NEVER resided there, i told the mailman and he shrugged,i don't think they want to take it back..Before i moved i contacted everyone i could think of and did 2 change of addresses in a row..The extra and non existent names that exist on the voting sheets is the responsibilty of Voter Registrars in City Hall

I had this same problem at my house, and it took several years to clear up.

Some of the 'registered voters', including my ex-wife who has resided in LA for the last 13 years, and a grad student that lived at the address over twenty years ago, prior to us purchasing the house.

I was informed by the registrar, that they periodically send out a notices to cleam up these errant voters, and that is the 'process'. After several trips to the registrar, over several voting seasons, with a pile of seven non-voters not residing in New Haven, the names were finally purged.

Because of my experience with this, it has made me believe this is a rampant problem in New Haven, and, politically, contributes to voter malaise by misrepresenting voter turnout.

My guess is this problem is directly proportional to the socio-economic status of the neighborhood.

Bill, you might have a point that the problem is somewhat related to the socio-economic status of the neighborhood but from my experience(s) with my addresses I'd wager that the problem's just city-wide regardless of that.
I'm glad that this posting is still getting attention months later, though. The issue still bothers me, and I'm still bothered by the fact that I don't know how to solve it.

LCI Watcher closed this issue, but I have absolutely no sense that it has been resolved. The fact that the election is over does not mean the issue is solved. I propose it remain open until the problem is solved.

I have been asked by SCF to evaluate whether this issue is closed. I am moved to remark that, with an election coming up that is rather a big deal, this issue is actually more important than it's been in the last twenty years. I hope that the incoming City Clerk will see fit to clean up this mess.
