I wonder if traffic calming here and at Grand and Olive would substantially reduce speeds at Court and Olive? Court and Olive feels like it should have some in road beautification regardless given its stature in New Haven's history.

yes. when buses were rerouted a few years ago the traffic and speeding got way worse. i think the work on the Q Bridge has also made it worse. People now use this as a main way to get to the on ramps to all of the highways. sometime we have a movable pedestrian walk sign but it is moved by people and can be problematic for cars (when it moves it can be a challenge to drive around.)

It sure feels that location is deserving of a permanent sign that can break away if a plow hits it.

I think the proximity of the firehouse at Grand is an obstacle for raised crosswalks and other effective traffic calming. Farmington Canal Phase IV should bring some improvement (assuming it finally goes out to bid one of these days)...

Chapel and Olive is demanding more attention than Court and Olive, although Court would benefit from anything done for Chapel and Olive, and deserves attention of its own as well. Chapel also needs speed humps. Commuters turn it into a race track and its

What about the neighborhood management team or other neighborhood assoc. (blockwatch) filling out a street-calming application and submitting it to the city to at least get on that waiting list? What about our alder? Anyone know if he is working on these intersections and Chapel St?

Also, at that link, the city responded about the complete streets application. there was someone in wooster square who wanted to do it but had to back out because of the time committment. i don't think anyone has done one. it seems like the city would be receptive to receiving one:

There you will find a “Complete Streets Manual” and “Project Request Form”. On October 23, 2008, The New Haven Board of Aldermen unanimously passed an order creating a nine member Complete Streets Steering Committee to guide the development of the following elements for the purpose of addressing the status of city streets: policy document, design manual, public process, educational campaign and traffic enforcement.

A focal point is to include feedback and ideas for street improvements from members of the community. You will also find previously submitted project requests from other community members. Please submit a “Project Request Form” for this issue through the link above. As a resident, you are not required to design anything. Instead, use the "Complete Streets Manual" as a showcase of the different types of traffic calming measures that may be used.
