Description
Because I live in this area, I travel on the part of Sherman that crosses San Antonio several times every day. Currently this intersection has two stop signs on Sherman however two more are desperately needed (on San Antonio) as I have gotten into near-miss accidents because the visibility is so poor. Cars park at the ends of each of these streets which make seeing cross-traffic impossible. I also walk this same route with my dog and have nearly been hit by cars unable to see me crossing the street. Lastly, with school having resumed, I fear for the safety of the children who walk or hike this route each day. Please be proactive as an accident at this intersection is preventable with the installation of two additional stop signs making this a four way stop.

Thank you for reporting your concerns about street safety in Alameda. San Antonio is proposed to be a traffic-calmed bicycle boulevard in the draft Active Transportation Plan recommendations. This would include crossing improvements at key intersections like Sherman. More information here: https://www.activealameda.org/Recommendations#section-3. The full draft Active Transportation Plan should be released in spring 2022. Join the mailing list here: www.alamedaca.gov/Subscribe
In April, 2021, the City Council approved final concepts for major safety improvements to Central Ave from Sherman to Main, including a roundabout with a slip lane (not a cul-de-sac) at Encinal and Sherman. While construction on the Central project is expected to begin in late 2022, the Sherman roundabout is not yet funded and timing will depend on funding sources. Project information is here: www.alamedaca.gov/central (the slip-lane option is slide 31 of the presentation)
Your report will help inform the City of Alameda’s work to achieve our Vision Zero goal of eliminating traffic fatalities and severe injuries. We will use street safety reports, including yours, in combination with crash data and equity indicators to prioritize and design street safety investments. This evaluation will generally happen on an annual basis, with some exceptions for clear and pressing trends. Issues that the City deems to be immediate safety concerns will be elevated for quick action.

Sorry about that -- I skipped a step! The Central Ave webpage has a link to the latest staff report, and the staff report has a link to the presentation. Here's the staff report link: https://alameda.legistar.com/LegislationDetail.aspx?ID=4906933&GUID=9D2E198B-4A2D-4D34-8DB0-94CC566F8B74&FullText=1
The presentation is Exhibit 7. For the Sherman/Central roundabout, Council chose the slip-lane option rather than the cul-de-sac option staff recommended. That's why the view on slide 31 is partial. Exhibit 2 contains a larger drawing of the Sherman/Central roundabout, but it's not the approved slip lane option (it shows a cul-de-sac).
