I agree with this issue. That intersection is scary in the morning when I am walking my daughter to school. The visibility is compromised due to parked cars and many cars exceed the speed limit there. I have no idea why there are so few stop signs in what is so clearly a school zone. This is also true of several other intersections in and around Franklin School and Franklin Park. Obviously children make frequent use of these streets. It would seem sensible to calm traffic around schools.

Yes, completely agree with both comments. I have made suggestions to this issue in the past and will continue to do so until there is a tangible improvement to this situation. We are very fortunate that there has not been a tragic accident involving a student at Franklin School. There was talk about a round-about at the intersection of Encinal and Sherman to create a barrier to use Sherman as a short cut to Grand Street, but not sure what the status is of that project. I hope the Sherman/San Antonio intersection as well as the area in front of Encinal High School are next on the priority. These two areas are accidents waiting to happen.

In April, 2021, the City Council approved final concepts for major safety improvements to Central Ave from Sherman to Main, including a roundabout with a slip lane (not a cul-de-sac) at Encinal and Sherman. While construction on the Central project is expected to begin in late 2022, the Sherman roundabout is not yet funded and timing will depend on funding sources. Your report will help inform the City of Alameda’s work to achieve our Vision Zero goal of eliminating traffic fatalities and severe injuries. We will use street safety reports, including yours, in combination with crash data and equity indicators to prioritize and design street safety investments. This evaluation will generally happen on an annual basis, with some exceptions for clear and pressing trends. Thank you for the information, however, I cannot find the slide deck that you reference in your note when I click on the link? Is this link still active? Where can I find the slide deck (and slide 31) that you note illustrates the planned roundabout with a slip lane at Sherman and Central? I would very much like to see and share these images with my neighbors, several of whom have become concerned about the speed of cut through traffic on Sherman Street, particularly in the morning when children are walking and biking to Franklin School and to Wood.

The presentation is Exhibit 7. For the Sherman/Central roundabout, Council chose the slip-lane option rather than the cul-de-sac option staff recommended. That's why the view on slide 31 is partial. Exhibit 2 contains a larger drawing of the Sherman/Central roundabout, but it's not the approved slip lane option (it shows a cul-de-sac).
