I agree that $1500 is not enough of a fine. Some of these people are drug dealers, making plenty of money, $1500 is nothing to them. They not only wake everyone up at all hours of the night, but they set off car alarms, too.

We've given up on calling the police. It does no good. Nor does calling our alder for help advocating on this issue. You can make the fine as high as you want. If the police do not go after the criminals, it doesn't matter.

I posted this complaint last year. There were a variety of responses, including law changes, what the police can and can't do about it, etc. I find it impossible to believe that lawmakers' hands are tied about this, as much as has been claimed. Last summer the police did arrest a couple of them, but only after going under cover, and filming them breaking the law in several different ways. If I didn't register my car and flagrantly drove it around, creating a public nuisance, I would be brought to justice quickly, without the police needing to get it on film. I just don't get it.

They are out in Beaver Hill right now. It's 1 am. This is how they get around being caught in the daytime, they disrupt everyone's sleep, peace and quiet overnight. Dirt bike hotline is 203-946-6098. Traffic Safety Hotline is 203-946-6956.

I called two different ATV hotlines recently (over a month ago) when two guys on a dirtbike and on an ATV nearly ran me and my toddler over at an intersection. The mailbox was full for one hotline; I left a message on the second. I received no reponse. I also sent an email to the mayor that day which was not acknowledged. Not even an automated response. What does it take to get some attention around here?

If you know where dirt bikes, quads and ATVs are garaged, report it to the New Haven Police ATV hotline at (203) 946-6098. Or, call your NHPD district manager. By reporting where these cars ATV and dirt bikes are stored, your district manager can build a case for getting a search warrant and eventually they will be able to confiscate the machines. But, first they need to build a case. They need to gather evidence.

For example, in the Edgewood/Dwight Neighborhood it is Sgt. Steve Torquati at (203) 946-7597. In the Whalley, Edgewood, Beaver Hills (WEB) Neighborhood it is Lt. Makiem Miller at (203) 589-3318 or mmiller@newhavenct.net. They will investigate and can confiscate the vehicles.
