Description

Because there are 4 lanes on this highway (2 in each direction) where probably no more than 1 is needed, traffic goes at 55 miles per hour here. A buffered bike lane would easily fit.

Agree--I ride this route every day. It would be the perfect location for a dedicated cycle track separated from traffic--remove 1 lane of traffic, put bi-directional bike lanes against curb, then parking lane, then traffic lane. Impact on traffic flow would be negligible and would greatly increase safety and provide a corridor from Westville to downtown.

Fully agree. Was going to post this as well.

A two-way protected lane with only 9 intersecting streets could start at Yale Avenue and end at Howe Street without taking away any parking.

Is there any reason not to do this?

Sure, sounds good, I want a greener New Haven. But the cost? $$$$$!!!! Until more Americans see ecological issues as social issues that affect their lives, projects like this seem 'way too blue-sky.

Costs would be minimal--you can do this simply by repainting the lanes and parking areas. Ideally you would also have some barriers, but it can be done just with line painting. DC has these all over the city, and they greatly improve accessibility.
