There does not appear to be any intersection performance or accident issue with this signal. Signal timing allows plenty of time for a left-hand movement after oncoming traffic has passed.
Issue will be referred to DOT Traffic for analysis. Only possible solution would be an advanced left signal since Main St only has one northbound lane.

Thanks for the repeated analysis (Planner) but we believe someone else on this board directed us to the same response much earlier regarding DOT ownership. It also included some constructive thoughts and improvements the city of Ansonia could take up with their current business tenants they house within the rough areas of the city center under their ownership. You may want to concentrate on that instead.

I get notified by SeeClickFix of every issue reported within the four-town Valley Region and just try to give people some insight, direct them to a better solution or report it to the proper agency. I think this site has great value for the community as long as we understand its limitations and its not abused by people with political or negative agendas. SeeClickFix should be a positive experience for citizen and government.
As this was a slightly different complaint from the other one you referenced, I contacted DOT district traffic to check whether the typical southbound queue had sufficient time to clear and still leave time for north-bounders to make the left movement. Also requested that they analyze whether an advanced left cycle was warranted
I don't "concentrate" on anything and I try not to give opinions. I really just focus on process and regulations and try to be helpful putting citizens together with the correct office of their government to address a particular issue.

As an Ansonia resident who travels that intersection many times a week I agree that it is extremely dangerous and difficult to make a safe left turn there. As far as waiting till the oncoming traffic is gone you just end up with another red light and wondering if you are ever going to be able to make the turn safely. I suggest the planner travel that route several times weekly at the lunch times and morning and afternoon rush hour. West Sider

I use that intersection and left turn regularly. I am familiar with its operation and traffic condition.I am requesting a warrant for an advance left cycle. DOT will make the determination based upon peak volume, speed and timing. Please note the speed they will use in their calculation is the design speed, not the posted speed. The design speed is generally faster than posted by about 15-30%.

This light is handled by the state DOT, and it was reported to them several years ago with the assistance of Rep. Gentile, who agreed that this light can be better designed. Since then I see that nothing has been done, which sadly is not a surprise. It is true that during some parts of the day, this is not an issue. It is also true that during the busier times, it is impossible to make that left turn without risking your life or blocking traffic illegally, or getting stuck, as has happened to me many times. The traffic barreling downhill toward the center has a right turn *green arrow* which means they don't even have to slow down, let alone stop before making the turn, which itself might help the situation. I will try to find the case number I got and see if I can wake them up in Hartford and get on this.

Thank you BeenThereDoneThat! How sad to hear that Rep. Gentile address this very issue with the DOT and NOTHING was done. You are correct that traffic does "barrel" downhill towards the center of town and I am often stunned they can even make the right turn at the speed they travel. Can ANYONE working for Ansonia get ahold of the DOT or shall we wait for a fatal accident at a time when the intersection is busy and you can't turn left onto 334 without blocking traffic or risking your life?

We have studied the intersection and find no difficulty at peak hours. However, we will review it again to determine if phasing can be adjusted. If an advance signal is warranted, it will take time to order and install a new light fixture.

Here is the reply I (and Rep Gentile) received from the Division Of Traffic to my suggestion on this - note the date in the reply...
"The Division of Traffic Engineering reviewed the subject intersections as a result of a June 11, 2008 email from Rep. Gentile. The email requested a Route 115 northbound advance left turn phase to be included in the traffic signal sequence at the intersection of Route 115 at Route 334. The review indicated that the geometric layout of the intersection, the one lane acceptance width on Route 334 westbound along with the high volume of right turners onto Maple Street necessitates the need for a northbound advance phase. The Division of Traffic Engineering will add this phase to the traffic signal as soon as scheduling permits."
And they haven't found "scheduling" in over five years? I was patient since I know between rough winters and money constraints, this may not have been the top of their priorities, but I guess they are waiting for someone to get killed at this intersection before they do something about it.

Angelo: As I understand it (and I don't promise to fully understand it, though it seems to be a game of Pass the Buck), the city is not responsible for it as it is the intersection of two state roads. I would, however, think the city could make some noise in Hartford when needed but clearly they cannot or will not in this case. Other than ask the state what's taking so long with my complaint, I guess we are in the hands of Planner. I don't take much comfort from that.

If there was a report by CT DOT Traffic it was not filed in any accepted manner; so no surprise it never got scheduled. What you have sounds more like a political document. City of Ansonia should address this with their Regional Planning Agency, who should be in possession of this "report" but is not.

Not sure what you mean by "political document", but yes, because the complaint was not requested through their ticketing system, but rather through a personal request (via email) by Rep Gentile, it probably did get forgotten. I'd be glad to post the names of the folks in Hartford that took part in this email conversation, and I'd probably do well to just email them again and ask them, but luckily, the city says it is going to look into this, which is more than we've gotten before, which may be the only thing "political" about this. I personally could care less who's in City Hall as long as they are earning their pay and benefits, and not just ignoring or rejecting all of our suggestions for improvements by stating "nothing is wrong".

Just meant that (not having seen the document) the reply from the state does not appear to be through regular channels. Doesn't mean it will be less effective, just that planners and engineers who get these types of referrals may not have in their system for follow-up. Understand that "political" may have a negative connotation to some, but was only meant to distinguish from an actual file referred from your Regional Planning Organization to the proper traffic officials. City should use the VCOG to pursue as they are the local planners who deal with state roads. That way the taxpayers are getting what they paid for and the file has a better chance of proper follow-up.

The staff responsible for this are the traffic folks in the Thomaston Maintenance District.

Good Morning, It has now been over four months since we saw Ansonia post "The City of Ansonia will be looking into this issue. Thank you all for reporting it here." I saw someone almost hit last week at this very intersection due to lack of arrow.

Yes, "writing your elected officials" seems to accomplish so much. I guess, sadly, we'll have to wait for someone to be serious hurt or worse and lawsuits to fly for the city to FINALLY fix this dangerous intersection.
