  • 475 Division Street Derby, Connecticut - Derby

The traffic signal at the intersection of Division street and Atwater/Clifton seems "confused" when it comes to directing traffic headed uphill towards Griffin.

This signal does have the ability (and uses is when the mood strikes) to give traffic wishing to make a left turn onto Atwater a green arrow to make their turn before turning green and letting cars going down Division to cross the intersection. This is the way it SHOULD be so those making a left turn can safely do so.

However, for reasons that boggle the mind, I've witnessed this signal only give a green arrow randomly. There is no other way to explain it. Doesn't matter if cars are waiting on the other side of the intersection or not. It will give a green arrow for a left on Atwater before turning green for the entire intersection, then the next time it won't, then maybe later it will. I can't tell if there is a timer that is set to only present the arrow at certain times but doing that would make no sense.

This is a hazard because if you have gotten the green arrow in the past, you think you are going to get one and could turn left when you see "green" not realizing you have not been giving the right of way via the arrow and collide with cars that have been released in the opposite direction. Yes, it would be your fault for not giving right of way to the cars heading towards Pershing, but if the signal does give you an arrow to turn first sometimes... confusion is sure to bloom.

Either the green arrow for left turn MUST appear every time this signal turns green or the arrow needs to be disabled. Having it display without any set pattern is asking for an accident.

  • 16 Atwater Avenue Derby, Connecticut - Derby

Something is not right at the intersection of Atwater Avenue and Seymour Avenue heading towards Seymour Avenue that needs attention. It's been this way for a long time and I am surprised no one has resolved it. As you can see by this photo, the signal facing Atwater has TWO signals on it. When a traffic signal has two lights on it, it is supposed to be because there are TWO lanes of traffic at that stop and the dual signals are required to direct both lanes of traffic.

Not the case here. Yes, the road is wide enough for two lines at this signal and yes, many cars need to make a right turn so they can enter Rt. 8 at that entrance. However, the road is not striped for two lanes so vehicles (unsure of where to stop) end up in the middle of the road between the two signals which prevents cars wanting to make a legal right on red to drive down Seymour Avenue from doing so because they are "blocked" by the cars technically stopped in the center of what should be two lanes according to the signal.

I have seen cars back up here often because of this. You want to turn right down Seymour but are blocked by several cars who want to go left towards downtown Derby but are between the two signals (and lanes) and prevent them from doing so.

    Two options here.

    1. That signal should be a single light and is dangerous as currently configured. One signal needs to be taken down so it matches the road, which is currently striped as one lane.

    2. The signal is correct, the road is supposed to be two lanes and Derby needs to stripe it as such at the intersection so cars know to get into one lane or the other solving the backup problem.

    How does this get resolved?

  • 36 Main Street Ansonia, CT - Ansonia

Twice in the last month I have seen cars almost be sideswiped when trying to turn left from Main Street in Ansonia onto Rt. 334 in front of the Housing Authority. For reasons that boggle the mind, the signal does not allow ANY right of way for vehicles who wish to turn left and pass over the bridge on 334 to make their turn. The light turns green and then red again for both sides of Main Street at the same time.

This means those wanting to turn onto 334 have to either "gun it" when the light turns green to get onto 334 before oncoming traffic starts to flow down main, dive between cars that come flying down from the opposite direction and turn right into 334 or have to run the intersection as the light turns yellow before 334 traffic flows onto main. At no time if traffic continues to flow on Main without a break are you given an error before or after the red to make a safe turn. Whose idea was this?! How can it be fixed?!
