Why are there so many bus cancellations when it is cold? For as long as I've lived in PA, bus cancellations seem to be a part of winter like snow on the ground and everyone accepts it without question. My question is why?
I believe education is important..and from the amount of cancellations on the radio when the tempurature drops below -30, education for our kids grinds to a halt.
My mother tells stories of when she was a kid, they'd hook up the team of horses to a covered in sleigh and off to school they went....even in -40. Forgive me for my ignorance, but in 2011 I would think that technology is better than in 1940. There should be no excuse for this many buses not running.....please enlighten me!

unfortunately, more advanced technology doesn't translate to better technology.
Diesel fueled buses are terrible in cold weather. And the new emissions electronics they're putting on buses are not reliable.
The school cancels wheelchair buses quicker because of the hastle that would occur if the lift malfunctioned in the cold. Plus those poor kids (and driver) would absolutely freeze every time the door was opened ( I think it's open for like 4-5 mins every time).

You idiot....I love to hear that they cancelled buses in this frigid weather, becuase I would rather know my children stayed home and didnt get stuck on a cold friggen bus in the middle of the country or highway...
They dont cancel buses cause they want to butt head...they do it to be SAFE and they THINK of the many YOUNG lives they are preventing from any harm!!!!

My mother remembers going to school by horse-pulled sleigh too. The part she remembers most vividly is being deathly afraid of the heater tipping over and setting the sleigh on fire.
The buses may not start on fire, but they sure as hell get stuck in ditches.
