The worst thing this city could have done -- among all the other stupid things it does -- is eliminate the transfer station and switch to curbside "bulk" pickup. Note that I put "bulk" in quotes, because if you read the rules, you'll know that bulk trash pickup is supposed to be for "large bulky items." Not for every little bit of trash that's accumulated in your basement, or -- and this is documented -- to those slumlords who abuse the system, your rentals in other towns. Instead, people pile up all manner of loose garbage, carrying out armloads of it, and dumping it on the curb, too friggin lazy to even put it in a bag or a box. Well, those lazy slugs who work for trash master, I just can't figure out why it takes them SO long to pick up all that loose garbage up. Just watch them labor over some of these amazing piles -- it'll take them 15 minutes or more at ONE house. So no wonder they can't get one zone done in a day. And no the answer is NOT to go back to monthly pickup. Not in this town where there is no enforcement, and people put this trash out many days before pickup, flagrantly ignoring the rule that says you should not put your trash out more than 24 hrs before pickup. Back when we had mnthly pickup, there was hardly a week when there weren't piles of "bulk" trash decorating our streets. It's not much better now, but it's better, and it'd be a lot better if these people were held to a decent and reasonable standard, and fined the $100 a day they owe the rest of us for trashing this town and making it look like the laughing stock of a garbage dump that it is, thanks to the amazingly high concentration of civically-challenged people who live here. The solution is to eliminate bulk trash pickup altogether, and rather than burden those of us -- including myself -- whose property taxes subsidize others' wastefulness, let them hire their own trash haulers, rather than paying for this service off our backs. Ever seen those signs for "1-800-GOT-JUNK"? It's called "pay as you throw" -- it's YOUR garbage, not mine, not anyone else's, and just because you put it on the curb, shouldn't make it everyone else's problem.
