Yeah NHPD is horrible I haven't had a good experience yet. Sorry I take that back Officer Perry who used to patrol around here was grreat until someone with higher seniority wanted to take his place and I have to say I never see them walking around as he did..... Just saying!!!!!

A while back a SCHOOL BUS hit my car--it was parked on the street. My neighbor saw it happen, called me, and I called NHPD immediately. Their response: there was nothing they could do about it. Really? That school bus came back (it's its route) every weekday, at the same time, for the remainder of the school year. There was an witness to the incident. All that it would take them would be to take my report, talk to my neighbor, and be in front of my house the next morning at the time of the school bus route.

The PD in NH keep claiming they are understaffed and overworked.Spread thin. But they hire more,and more,OT but mostly at the bars downtown. Slow response times or no response is part of it.
But sadly , so many residents complain that they espy them sleeping,whistling whitling away.

I heard there isn't any police in this area walking anymore and hasn't been since the assistant chief Casanova decided there didnt need to be. We should all call him and thank him. of course, we cant because our cell phones were stolen from our cars. I bet Chief Esserman has never had his car broken into.

You are incorrect that there is no walking beats in that area. There is a day time walking beat and a two man walking beat 3pm to 11pm. Also if you call the non emergency number and someone tells you they do not care, please get their DA number and will address it.

I have yet to see one walk down cottage street we all knew officer perry so no I'm not incorrect they probably walk just down orange street not every other street as he did

They are REQUIRED to take a report, This more for statistical purposes so the District Managers know what is happening in their districts- get the name or ID # of the operator at dispatch and/or request to speak with a supervisor and THEN CALL YOUR DISTRICT MANAGER AND REPORT IT !! The non-emergency center has improved over the years, but they still have a few bad apples to weed out.

I have yet to hear exactly what it was that was said when you attempted to report it. Were you told it was police policy to do the report over the phone? Because I sincerely doubt anyone told you they "don't care" (thank LT). So again, I ask, what were you told exactly??

I hate that I have to write this, but this is the state of New Haven right now. I personally never lock my cars, as I don't have the time & money to replace broken windows or slashed tops. I live in central Fair Haven and it's not uncommon to find the contents of my car's glove box on the floor in the morning, from someone rummaging in there, hoping to find loose change or whatever. Yes it sucks and it shouldn't ever be like this, but for me it's just the path of least resistance at this point. I have never lived in a place that cared so little about quality of life issues and allowed neighborhoods to degenerate to this point.

Sarah, I was never told "we don't care" but it was definitely the feeling I got. After finding the window smashed in I called the non emergency number and said I wanted to report my car being broken into. The dispatcher asked if I took an inventory of what was stolen. I said no, I haven't touched anything yet. She said "we won't send a car unless the items missing total more than $1000 so find out what is missing and call us back if it's over $1000". The thief only took spare change but I called back anyway and asked how I was supposed to get a report for insurance if they don't send an officer. The second dispatcher stated "oh, we can do that over the phone". The 2nd woman was helpful and friendly but it would have been nice to have been told this on the first call.

Can you (and others posting here) tell me if you have an alarm on your car that was on? I'm just curious to see if that was a deterrent or not.

Ok, see, THAT makes more sense. You were never TOLD they don't care, what you were told was to take an inventory of what was taken and call back so they could do a report over the phone and give you a case number which you would then give to your insurance company, as is the policy set by THE SWORN POLICE DEPT (again, thanks LT, love the way you toss them right under that bus without any follow up on someone's very vague and inaccurate information). You felt an officer should respond and did not like the answer you were given, so that has to mean no one cares. I feel I should be 5'9" and 135lbs, this doesn't make it so.

And of course, you FORGOT to say you actually had a pleasant and positive experience with an employee. I'm sure that was just an oversight on your part, of course you would only remember the bad (in your opinion) because that is what always sticks out in a person's memory.

I'm sorry you had your car broken into and items stolen, it is a terrible thing to wake up to. It's frustrating and highly annoying to begin your day this way, but honestly, the people who are attempting to help you are not at fault and shouldn't be blamed for your terrible morning.

Maybe if you call the LT directly on his cell phone next time he can offer to do the report for you himself? Oh wait, he doesn't give that out does he?

See, I've had my car broken into also. I live only a few blocks away from you, and although I ultimately blame the person who did the actual breaking in, I also blame myself. I left my cellphone on the charger because I lost the house charger and my phone was almost dead. I also had several shopping bags in the back seat (this happened just before Christmas) as I couldn't carry everything at once. I was being lazy and didn't go back out to get the bags thinking I'll get them when I get my phone. I was practically begging to get robbed. Thing is, I didn't blame the police dispatchers and I certainly didn't expect them to send a cop or fingerprint CSI my car, especially on a Saturday night at 10 at night. Truthfully, they have much more important things to do than to look at the empty space where my window used to be.

I wish we could hear your actual calls and exactly what was said, not your version of it. Although I'm sure your second post was closer to the truth.

Again, I'm sorry this happened to you. For your sake and for the sake of the dispatchers I hope it doesn't happen again.

First and formost, nowhere in my original post did I ever say that I was told "we don't care" or "too bad" by the original dispatcher. But I was also never told that I could file a report over the phone. The original dispatcher told me to call back "if what was stolen was valued at more than $1000", not "call us back either way and we'll file the report" I was unaware of the police departments policy on car break-ins as, shockingly, this is the first time it's happened to me in the 22 years I've been hanging out in or living in New Haven. And as originally stated, I feel that if the neighborhoods were policed more (and later than 11:00, as most break-ins seem to happen overnight) and there was more done about them, it would make sense that they would decline. And my original post was written before my pleasant experience with dispatcher number 2 hence the lack of mention.

Car break-in up here on Avon Street, too, last night. Broke same window as on your car and went into the center console. Took an old (nearly worthless) iphone but found the change jar full of pennies so left it on the car floor. Took a few duffel bags I'd stupidly left in the car and dumped them out while still in our backyard, to find nothing but some clothes (took nothing). Car was in our driveway, back of the house (multi-family). Our neighbor heard the car alarm go off, twice, in her sleep but didn't realize it was coming from our backyard. Not sure if that noise curtailed the rummaging! I did call NHPD and reported it, and they told me the same thing about the $1K value, though still gave me a case #. Wonder if this was the same thief?
