Thanks, not to mention there is a giant (beautiful) magnolia tree at the corner of Peachtree, which wasn't there when this was designed. It completely obscures all view of cars/people coming down that road. The hills and additional cars parked on both sides of the street, trees, fences and additional traffic (avoiding Daniels) are all causing a very dangerous intersection.

Another factor that complicates this intersection (Peachtree/Gordon/Ashland) is the odd intersection with Ashland and Berkshire just few feet away. These two streets intersect at a point where (1) Ashland has a sharp curve, and (2) Ashland rises steeply. Between those two physical factors and the parked cars, you cannot see approaching cars until you're actually IN the intersection.

The mornings are especially dangerous. People that are trying to avoid Daniels middle school traffic use Peachtree St. and are regularly driving well above appropriate speeds. Trying to exit a driveway during the school year is stressful and very difficult. Review the traffic pattern, adding signs/signal, speed bumps/tables would greatly increase the safety for those of us living in Wayland Heights.

I totally agree on everything already commented on. I would add: People are also speeding and cutting through on the private drive now located between Peachtree and Oberlin itself. At very lease each of these points at the intersection needs to be controlled by stop signs with "4 ways" or "all ways" noted on each stop sign. I'd really love to also see speed bumps because that doesn't give drivers much of a choice about their speed. This neighborhood is populated with children who don't have sidewalks for safety so we MUST make the roadways safer.

I've referred this to our Public Works Department. When the staff has had a chance to respond I’ll post an update. Thanks for reporting.

It would also be great if no parking were allowed on Ashland in that short space between Peachtree and Oberlin. Cars parked there along with the steep hill, make a dangerous spot when people are exiting Oberlin onto Ashland.

I think if done in unison, the ideas of a four way stop sign, a speed bump or two on Peachtree, and a "No Parking" sign on Ashland b/t Oberlin and Peachtree would probably solve the problem. There should be stop signs where Ashland meets Berkshire as well. This confluence of streets is potentially treacherous, with years of near-misses. Sometimes I hold my breath when I come over the hill from Oberlin down Ashland...and when turning onto Berkshire from Ashland, never knowing if someone unfamiliar with the lay of the land will come speeding in the opposite direction.

Oh..and I wish they could post "No Through Traffic" at the bottom of Peachtree at Wayland. That could come back to "bite..... ," but the Daniels traffic just flys through every morning.

Someone in a Prius, who was hauling a large chair stuff in the back, almost flattened me turning from Ashland onto Berkshire. I welcome all of these suggestions if would calm traffic and make it safer to walk and drive here!

Per Public Works: Both the intersection analysis and traffic calming evaluation are complete. The intersection met none of the warrants and the traffic calming evaluation did not make the 30 point minimum threshold or the 600 vehicle per day requirement. This is a dangerous intersection and someone is going to get killed simply because there isn't a 4 way stop or anything that will slow traffic down or allow additional visibility at the intersections.

We need some kind of response from the city other than we don't meet generic requirements bacause we don't have a generic neighborhood. It doesn't matter that 600 vehicles don't pass thru, what matters is that the intersection should have never been constructed (75 years ago as my house is 1934) AND would never be constructed at all in the present day.

We have an old intersection, in an old neighborhood, with extremely narrow streets, no sidewalks and 90% parking on both sides of those narrow streets. This is now an incredibly dangerous situation because of complete lack of visibility in the intersection (tree growth/more cars/larger cars/home expansions) for children, families, drivers and walkers alike

also, you did one of these evaluations (peachtree street) on a vacation day for Daniels middle school so one whole day of traffic was lost.

Extremely disappointed that apparently nothing will be done to make this dangerous intersection safer. Hard to belive that it was given more than a cursory glance. Please take another look.

If you drive up Peachtree and stop at the STOP sign, you can't see if anyone is driving up Gordon on your right. So it isn't safe to just pull out as if you're sure that nothing is coming. When you pull forward far enough to see, you're "running" the STOP sign... AND pulling out into the intersection where you're in the line of fire from vehicles turning off of Ashland. Those vehicles are coming downhill at that point and are often moving too fast to avoid a collision.

This (Peachtree/Gordon/Ashland) intersection is an accident waiting to happen.

Peachtree Mom, I empathize with you. I have gotten the brush off so many times when complaining about traffic issues. What it really takes is someone on City Council (Mary Ann Baldwin) almost getting hurt (how many times have I had to dodge crazy drivers on foot and in vehicles) to bring attention to these problems? You shouldn't be surprised that this intersection doesn't meet the criteria. The intersection of Clark and Oberlin, where all construction has been going on forever and the sidewalks have been marginally passable, was deemed safe for pedestrians. In fact, the post I saw concerning that intersection stated that City of Raleigh employees witnessed several pedestrians crossing safely. I wondered if they observed this at 3 am.

It's frustrating ...

I did speak toThomas Fiorello and although I do not agree, he was extremely thoroughand knowledgable about their traffic investigation. However, He said they are still evaluating what can be done. He agreed that the intersection has issues and should not have been designed as it is: including he stop sign on Gordon is back too far, also you can't see the intersection sign coming down Ashland (behind parked cars and trees) and that drivers can't see Peachtree at all when coming down the hill turning onto Gordon. They are going to look into these but to me, isn't enough.
This intersection is dangerous. plain and simple, to pedestrians and drivers alike. If the city doesn't do something, someone will get hurt or killed. Maybe a lawsuit will force this issue further. Please do not close this ticket until at least those issues are resolved.

Peachtree mom, thanks for your efforts and I'm glad to hear that they are still evaluating what can be done. I'm glad Mr. Fiorello mentioned the intersection sign on Ashland. Its the only thing alerting people that there's a messy intersection coming up. But the sign is poorly located, and obscured as he noted.

Still hoping he and his collegues will come up with something to improve this hazardous situation.

I don't live there, but visit my sister who does, and I am totally confused every time. I had no idea there were even stop signs, and am somewhat surprised I've never hit someone or gotten hit. I hope something is done!
