Isn't there a sign or there was a sign saying that if your child is under 16 they must be accompanied by an adult. It was for Friday, Saturday and Sunday's. I also think if you went to customer service and reported the behavior the parents would be called and the kids asked to leave, I know they have a list of people they do not want back in the mall( A Black List). I do like to go up on the weekends, the kids run, curse and make so much noise especially in the food court.. Where are the security personnel?

Where I live in Kingston, it is not a good idea to use your name when you are making complaints, it will get you a broken window or worse people coming up to you and threatening you or your kids. It has happened to me before so I do not use my real name..

i am not worried because my real addresse is not really listed anywheres and for all you know this could not even be my real name.. but it is a real problem and yes the kids need to be taken care of by their parents.

So where do you suggest these kids go? The streets? Out drinking/drugs? It's not like Kingston has many safe environments for these kids to go to to hang out with friends. It's not like the schools offer any dances? And because a few kids who are out of control shouldn't ruin it for those who are there to see friends, shop, or see a movie. I am a parent of a teenager who goes to the mall. I am also a parent who sticks around while her teenager walks around with his friends. Don't really care if you like or not. I rather my child here then out causing trouble or worse getting involved in drugs/alcohol. And security does help with the out of control kids. I have seen it with my own eyes. Mall security is doing a fine job on keeping the kids in line at the mall. I have shopped on the weekends and have had no problems with the kids more with ignorant adults.

No problem to be fixed. Mall security does a fine job on keeping up with safety for all that come and go in the mall. The kids really aren't that bad. And those that are their parents are called and the kids are no longer welcomed there.

Good point, where would people have them be with their friends. I stick around some of the time for mine and haven't had any problems arise. What I have found is what I expect anywhere, that is respect and common courtesy go a long ways. Is there a small group that causes problems, you bet. Thats true in the teen and adult world. I have seen adults at the mall who were rude to teens and adults who would not say a word after bumping into a teen. When it's time for school clothes shopping, I give my kid the money and let him do it. He doesn't need a chaperone. What I have seen is too many adults that think that the world revolves around their immediate need and if anyone gets in their way, too bad. Their in a hurry and thats all that matters. The lessons that kids get out of that.

I definitely agree that the gangs of teenagers at the mall are an issue. I avoid the situation altogether now by not going on the weekends. No one would have a problem with these kids being at the mall if they were there to shop, or eat with friends, or see a movie. The last time I checked, that is what the mall is for. It is not a "hang out spot".

I was tired of listening to these kids yelling and cursing at each other. I was tired of them standing in the middle of the walkway, making it difficult for those of us who are trying to shop to pass by them.

I have never been rude to any of your precious teenagers who have no respect of manners. I am not much older than they are, and I was not allowed to "hang out at the mall". I was only allowed to go with a purpose.

Why don't you allow your kids to hang out at your home with their friends? Is it because you don't want to be bothered with listening to them yell and curse in your home?

Thank You to those of you who do raise respectable teens who do use the mall for what it is intended. But for those of you who want your kids out of your home and hair, and to be entertained at the mall, it isn't fair to everyone else to listen to them yelling and screaming, jumping on each other, and cursing. Mall security isn't there to keep YOUR KIDS in line. They are there to look out for those that are trying to shop.

Entertain and discipline your own kids. Stop relying on everyone else to do it for you.

I find it funny that people actually think mall security is hired to keep teenagers and younger kids in the mall in line. Last time I checked, that is a parent's responsibility, or A BABYSITTER. When ppl talk about daycare, are they saying 8 yr olds are wandering in packs through the mall?
Swearing may be protected as free speech, but it may be that the mall as private property gets to curtail it.

First of all, I didn't say I just leave my kid there. I stay at the mall while they walk around with their friends. Each of parents of my kids friends take turns as to who will stay at the mall with them. So if there is a problem it can be dealt with immediately. I agree parents shouldn't just drop off their kids and leave but they do. And please Learn how to read. Second of all, I am not defending all kids, I am stating that there are those kids there who are well behaved, who do have money to spend, who go shopping, see a movie and eat with their friends. Are you saying they shouldn't be allowed because of few rotten eggs. Well I don't think so. And thirdly, my house quite often is filled with teenagers, I love when they are here. They also go bowling on occasion or to woodnwheels. Obviously, none of you have ever been teenagers before. Or you don't have kids. Or your child since you keep them tightly locked down in your home will end up like the one who went on a shooting spree in Arizona. Social Skills are a key element in a childs developement into adulthood. I have witnessed on numerous accounts at the mall many so called adults being extremely rude to these kids all because they are kids. I had a confrontation with one of these so called adults because of this. Not all kids should grouped into the category of being animals, or out of control. I find actually "animals" to quite offensive. It appears by your attitude towards the younger generation you are the one with unnatural animal instincts, and maybe you should be looked more carefully in the public eye as maybe a potential threat to our youth. Mall security job is to protect the merchant and the buyer regardless of age. That means whether it be a kid or an adult acting a like a complete animal, rude, disrespectful or out of control they are dealt with. And if security feels the need to they do and will call Ulster Police to not only handle the situation. Both security and the police do inform the parents of minors and hold them accountable. And just so you know minors do have rights too. My child also attends KHS and I would like to say Thank You Very Much to Kingston City Schools for providing a nuturing, caring, safe and stable educational environment for my child. Never had any problems with safety in any of their schools. If you are having issues with safety in the schools may I suggest you look further into how your child played a role in it. Or maybe get more involved in your childs life, friends and school. Its apparent to me that many of you who are categorizing all children/teenagers in this group of out of control kids needs to get a grip and get a life. what if you were put in a category that all adults attending the mall on weekends are ignorant, rude and out of control would that apply to all of you. I will defend my kid and his friends as much as I need to. sorry you have a problem with that but get over it.

You know - maybe you should learn to read Craig. Instead of trying to defend a point that I already accepted on your behalf, why don't you just admit that the majority of the kids left alone at the mall are a problem, and I'm sure security isn't exactly fond of them and if you were to say any of this to security it would be like preaching to the choir. If they were well-behaved "shoppers" then nobody would be complaining. Sure there are some well-behaved kids who do go to the mall and shop and see a movie or go eat with their friends. However I think the point of this post is that the majority of them aren't your innocent young shoppers. Businesses are run here. This isn't a playground. The more commotion, the less business the stores are receiving from regular customers because now these customers don't want to show up on Friday and Saturday nights to shop. They want to avoid a stampede of kids who run, yell, curse, start fights and loiter in front of entrances and exits. It's hazardous. And it's a trickle down effect really. Unnecessary misbehavior from out of control kids means less business. Less business on the weekends means less payroll hours provided to employees for their scheduled work hours. You now have @#$% off customers and employees who want nothing to do with the mall and are tired of the same friday and saturday night disturbance. If your kid can be a decent young adult and use the mall for it's purpose, that's great news. Unfortunately those who can't seem to do so are going to ruin it for everyone else. And that's the reality.

Geez, is this really the issue that the people posting here are making it out to be? I go to the mall whenever I feel the need, which sometimes includes Friday or Saturday night, and there is no bother from any kid, the only thing I may encounter outside the entrance is a teen (or adult) asking if I have a smoke or a light as I pass by. Inside the mall is certainly no "zoo", I see no fights, no beligerent teens, no problematic loitering...I get more annoyed by the ADULTS who just stop right in the middle of the walking lane because they can't figure out what they are doing, but ya know what? That's part of going to a MALL. I definitely have never been turned off from the mall by the behavior of kids. Some of the young women's attire has been questionable at times but that's about it and its no better inside the schools, you just don't see it there...

Stop arguing about whether or not there IS a problem and define the problem more concretely.

I would say that anyone who believes there is a problem can go to customer service at the mall or to the security office which is right by J C Penney and make a complaint. If they get enough, they will make a change. This isn't like trying to fix a road or a stop sign, the city does not control it. And I don't believe that someone going and saying they are connected to this site will carry any weight. So all this arguing until we define this or that is pointless. Aside from each person who wants to making a complaint, what does anyone think will happen. You have the power of feet, to shop elsewhere.

as far as security goes. it is their job to protect the SHOPPERS, not the kids that get dropped off at the mall to wander for hours. also a child under the smoking age asking for a light or a smoke is not a problem? do they ask their parents for one at home? be serious! parents should be taking their kids out on weekend nights and spending family time with them and letting their friends go with them if they want social. gee lets think about it. they get to be social doing positive activities through school or at school . or if you are such a great parent then you already have had them intrested in hobbies they can do on their free time. wandering the mall to get in the way of SHOPPERS is not a hobby.

Also i have had problems with kids bumping into me while a child was with me and then i almost had to fight back when the kid and his so called little gang friends wanted to jump me. so yeah these problems do exist and then when i went and told security , they told me there was nothing they could do because they were not around when it happend. how come the other malls do not have this type of promblem for many years?

because they took care of it. our mall needs to install cameras and make it obvious by those big black bubbles that they have cameras. i am unsure what would of happened to that teenager and his little buddies if they would of hurt the actual child i was with.
but to most to you that obviously would be ok if it was your child that got bumped and fell and cracked their head open huh?? well you can sleep easy thinking that way but i and many others can not.

I guess what I can't understand is...if everyone on here who is posting is at the mall supervising their kids, then why are they fighting for "the right" for kids to be left alone at the mall? Why are they being so defensive? It sounds as though these are the very people whose kids are at the mall loitering, cursing and running around.

It is true, those of us who don't want to put up with the nonsense can shop elsewhere, but why should we? I personally do drive all the way to Poughkeepsie because I choose not to deal with the obnoxious kids at the mall on the weekends.

For example, one time I had my 4 year old daughter with me, and we were walking and a teen girl (probably about 14) was yelling "F*ck you b*tch" at another girl. Is that necessary? This is not an isolated incident, either. Haven't any of you read about the fights that are there?

We also have a 32 year old man missing from Kingston, but we should just dump our kids off at the mall and all will be fine?

I am not sure why kids need a special place to hang out. What's wrong with each other's homes? What about family time? How about they get jobs?

If you want to scream that your teenager "has rights" well also consider that the rest of us do as well. Teenagers do have the right to be at the mall, but they shouldn't be dumped off there for mall security to deal with, and everyone else to tolerate. It is unfortunate that all of the bad eggs are ruining it for everyone else, but that is why we have both rules and laws. I have a right to take my daughter to the mall to do some shopping and not deal with nonsense, as does everyone else.

I am sorry if that makes some of you angry, but I am echoing what many others feel about this. I noticed that 16 other people want this fixed, so perhaps all of us should go to the mall and ask that something be done. Then, we won't have to fight about it on here anymore.

If anyone has a problem with the mall, they need to take it to the management there, or security. Arguing about any part of it here is just a waste of time. If they get enough complaints they might do something, but I would be more than surprised if they did. They have had opportunities in the past to do something, and have not. I don't believe they will do anything now. A lot of those teens spend money up there, and they know that. Give them the boot, and that is a loss. Most parents don't have the time to go up there and stay.

The parents who love this idea of drop off get em later really don't want to be bothered and are the first to blame everyone for what happens to their little darling when they were absent and uninvolved period....We in this area have the worst mall and stores and parking so unfortunately I myself DO GO OUT OF HERE and to Albany or Poughkeepsie deals are better and quite frankly so his the food..these stores have set themselves up for the buying power of the people and that is the low end salaries sorry but that is true and we have the lowest selections ,colors etc....so head out early and enjoy your day it is worth it....

Actually, I have a sixteen yr old and a twelve yr old and a ten yr old. I sometimes let them go to the movies wo me. Sometimes they go to the mall in a group. I have taken them to the mall. I have dropped them and observed them (I used to be in undercover work)and they are fine. Now that they have proven they are responsible in a thousand ways, sometimes the 16yo, sometimes th 13 yo can go to the mall UNSUPERVISED with friends.

My kids all do jobs of various sorts for neighbors and earn money. There are stores at the mall that are geared for those under 18. What bothers me is this attitude that teens need to be babysat and suddenly, given no independence and no responsibility for 18 years,at 18 tra la!, they are good to go.

The Mall and walking around town, bike riding in the city, UNOBSERVED BY THEIR MOM AND DAD are all experiences we had growing up in America in the 20's 30's 40's 50's 60's 70's 80's and nineties. Now for 3 decades ppl have been having 1 kid per family, and smothering them. We are raising big self centered babies. Yes, the community needs to help raise kids, and part of that is saying something if you see behavior you don't like. Then they learn that family standards are community standards.

i absolutly agree and i bet it is still a issue of parents leaving their kids unattended.. if you cant be there with them then how do you have the time to drop them off and pick them up? that is a said excuse for real. get a grip on life and stop putting your kids on other peoples time and if you want them to learn community standards then go with them and teach them from the FAMILY standards.. teach them that life is about spending time , not about clogging business areas because they are there for people to browse and buy stuff. not a hangout for kids and lazy parents to get a few hours to themselves.. What I always tried to do was to make my home the place that my son and his friends would want to hang out at. Make it the place where they can play games, make noise, have many pizza nights. The only rule is respect and there has never been any problems. They can argue, that's normal, but not anything where I have to get involved. They spent a little time at the mall, but it was more being there to buy something than hang out.

runone.. that is the best way i can agree to also.. i would much rather have my kids at my house doing what kids do instead of interupting businesses. plus why should the people that are there to browse and buy things, well why do they have to be bumped into or hear curse words. or their little children that are with them be subjected to those conditions.. parents need to get a grip and stop just dumping their children off.. it is not a babysitting service. kingston needs to build more things for kids to do.. or places designed so they can hang out and enjoy themselves and interact with other teenagers. what about a sober dance club then on the other side of it , have a coffee and cafe shop with internet and some game consoles.. who knows but they need something inexpensive for the teens to hangout at that they would like to do..
