I posted a concern about speeders on Benham about 2 years ago. It has gotten worse, people come down the hill at ridiculously high rates of speed. It seems to be worse on weekends when the plaza is busier.

I don't think traffic enforcement will do the job. What needs to be done is installation of speed bumps that make it impossible to travel at these speeds. I really have given up and never use Benham. I feel sorry for the people who live on that street.

This is a very serious issue, indeed. Why is the traffic enforcement so bad here? I've never seen anything like it. Numerous other states and cities I've lived in had much better traffic enforcement. I think the city (or State) should mandate a speeding ticket quota as they do in Colorado. This really motivates the police, who then have to give out a certain number of speeding tickets by the month's end.

Umm...if the law was enforced, most people would stop speeding. Gee, that would be horrendous.

And if every one did 25 to 30 miles an hour there would be traffic non stop during 17 of 24 hours a day. Sorry Melissa that is just not a praticle answer. The real speed most people go "IS" taken into account when the state of CT sets the speed limit on state roads. (all state roads) It is time to "GET REAL" girl

Life Guard- Just who are you referring to as "you people"? This thread is about lower Benham Street, and speeders going 50+ mph around a blind corner where residents are trying to pull out of a side streets and driveways, not the left lane of the highways. I've lived here 30 years- In that time, I've had a car hit my front porch and land nose down against my neighbor's house, and have seen cars tear down fences, hit traffic signs and telephone poles. There have been many injuries, some serious, and at least 2 fatalities, all due to speeding. Benham Street is not a state road- the town has set the Speed Limit at 25 MPH, because it what is considered safe and "practical" for this area. Finally, it's the number of cars on the road that determines traffic congestion, not the speed limit. Please stay on topic, and quit bullying Melissa- If you want to complain about slow drivers on the state highways, start another thread- I will agree with you there.

"traffic calming" studies done by the town totally ignored this section of town and focused on Spring Glen and Whitneyville. While I do want to see traffic calming measures throughout the town, Benham and all the residential side streets experience just as much is not more through traffic and speeding.

Since I submitted this original comment 1251 days ago, there has been at least two dozen more accidents, including two separate accidents that took out the telephone poles in front of my house. My neighbor of 11 years feared so much for the safety of his children that he decided to move. And what has the Hamden P.D. done in those 1251 days? Nothing- No radar, no speed trailer- Zilch. Yet, you can still see two (sometimes three) patrol cars behind Walgreens on Dixwell every morning doing...what? Is fixing this problem beyond the acumen of Hamden's "Finest"? There doesn't seem to be a problem getting police for the constant gas and electric projects on the street- Why can't they bring a radar gun and possibly contribute to Hamden's fiscal deficit by snagging these speeders (or texters, or cell phone users)?

I just moved to Benham St and the high speeds on this street are incredibly dangerous. I am always terrified when coming out of my driveway. There needs to me more signs issued by blind driveways so people are aware of them as well as the need to slow down their speeds.
