This intersection is incredibly dangerous with cars coming flying down Whalley, running the red light, and with the light timing on the pedestrian signals and York St not set up right so that cars do not have time to clear intersection.
Also, cars frequently enter this intersection even when it is clogged with traffic. Then, even though the light has long been red, they drive through the pedestrians when the intersection clears enough for them to move forward. The worst part is, they're usually mad at the pedestrians for being "in their way".
Here's video of cars consistently running the red light during rush hour.
Is Yale and/or the City going to do anything to make this intersection safer? Over the years several students have been seriously injured here. What are folks waiting for, another pedestrian death?
If you are concerned about this issue, please contact your state representatives and senators to ask them to try again next year to pass legislation to allow New Haven to use automated camera enforcement of red lights at troublesome intersections.
We should use SeeClickFix for all of these. Once we have a video of red light running at every intersection in New Haven, all the issues can be linked up to one site, mapped and/or aggregated into a single presentation.
There is gridlock on this intersection most days during rush hour, which further delays traffic. I think there should definitely be some sort of enforcement for running red light running, as well as for creating gridlock. However, I never see police in that area during rush hours, when most of these violations happen.
It's not just a matter of running red lights (although, as many have pointed out, that is certainly a problem) but, since the traffic light is set back relatively far from the pedestrian crossing, cars can go through a green light and still end up passing through the pedestrian crossing (usually at high speed) at the beginning of the pedestrian cycle. Not good.
Hunter is right - I routinely cross this intersection as a pedestrian and have to wait several seconds to cross before all the traffic clears. Meanwhile the pedestrian signal has already been triggered. I noticed just yesterday as a passenger in a car going through the the same intersection, that even though we cleared the green light the pedestrian signal had been triggered by the time we reached the crosswalk. Simple solution is to delay the crosswalk signal by about 5 seconds.

Great point resident!
I'll do york/frontage this weekend and link them to the CTLivableStreets.org website as well as post them on SeeClickFix.com
Ed - you should send your link to the list as well so that they're all documented similarly
or should we just use seeclickfix for it? might be hard to go back and find later if we want to use them for advocacy. thoughts?

The Yale PD should ticket and/or warn pedestrians at the intersection. Many do not respect the traffic lights.
Drivers should also be ticketed for running reds if it's as bad as the video shows.
