Today, 7/20, at 6:15 pm: Hispanic male, short cropped hair, diamond-ish studs, red shoes driving a white four wheeler north on Poplar St. He cut across the Montesanto Auto Body parking lot on the Poplar/Lombard corner, to get ahead of an oncoming car, and then headed east on Lombard.

Today, 7/21, at 2:15 - 2:30 pm: Hispanic male, short cropped hair, multiple tattoos, black shoes, on a red & white dirt bike with "32" on it, driving up AND down Poplar St, which is a one way street that heads north. Recognized operator of dirt bike as Jesus Valle (aka Lolo), who just did a stint in juvenille detention for this very same thing. NHPD / Sgt Anastasio & Johnson, can we can some enforcement on this? You know where he lives.

Addendum: He's now posted photographs on Instagram. I'm attaching one here that shows 279 Chatham St in the background, which is on the corner of Chatham and Poplar St. In this picture he is driving south on Poplar St. His red "Bike Life" tattoo is clearly seen on the underside of his left arm.

Today, 7/21, at 8:10 pm - Male, med to dark brown skin, white cloth over head, grey & black striped tee, heading north on Poplar St on a red & white dirt bike.

Poplar St is now being inundated with wannabe BikeLife kids, all juvenile, probably under 13. There's a blue/white pocket rocket, a red mini four wheeler and a red mini motorcycle, all riding up and down Poplar St (which is a one way) AND ON THE SIDEWALK in both directions. This is occurring nearly daily at this point, between 5:30 and 8:00 pm. It is loud, obnoxious and dangerous. I have called the NHPD non emergency line multiple times now, but some daily enforcement would be greatly appreciated. This is happening on Poplar St between Pine and Lombard. I will post pics when I am able. Thanks.

They are not killing people, fair haven has such a bad crime rate NHPD should be worried about that and not the kids on dirt bikes and atvs.

Re-opening this because it's still an issue. "Fair Haven Lover," when quality of life issues are addressed, crime DECREASES. The illegal operation of dirt bikes / ATVs are certainly a quality of life issue. Do the research and work to make Fair Haven a neighborhood worth loving.

I for one think that almost being run off the road by a pack of dirt bikes coming toward me doing wheelies while I was pregnant a definite issue. I was fearful for my safety and as a Fair Haven Resident I think that's a DEFINITE issue. From the sound of your non-argument sit sounds like you may be a dirtbike rider???

No I don't ride, but there is such a bad crime rate and people are worried about kids riding atvs and dirt bikes instead of those innocent people dying by then gun. Thats a real issue

Fair Haven Lover, it's not an either-or situation; it ALL matters. It's not that we're worried ONLY about ATVs/ dirt bikes, but ALL OF IT. Research has shown that when quality of life issues are addressed (noise, traffic violations, blight, etc), crime goes down. When police pay attention and enforce laws about noise and traffic, which includes ATVs/dirt bikes, the crimes you are mentioning will also decrease. When you address quality of life issues it makes the neighborhood better for everyone.

This is a difficult issue. No one is denying that the police have other serious issues to deal with, especially since two young men were recently killed in Fair Haven/Fair Haven Heights. That said, this is a quality of life issue, it's illegal, and it's dangerous. I live on a street where there is a significant problem with dirtbikes and ATVs, many of us have almost hit or been hit by them, and they strive to be intimidating and disruptive. I agree with FairHavenRes on every point s/he's made.

Like Gilly said, these career losers run people off the road. That is beyond reckless driving, it is assault and the police need to get on this or get sued by the citizens.

Long story short, if New Haven wants to stop chronic migration of blue collar, middle class, and professional white collars out of neighborhoods besides East Rock and Westville, it has to address quality of life issues (dirtbikes and ATVs primary among them). NHPD has the law to confiscate the bikes (passed with the help of many ClickFixers!). The new Fair Haven sub-station sargeant seems much less proactive than Sgt Zona, unfortunately. I've already started setting money aside for a new mortgage, many doubts about safety and sanity living in Chatham Square/Fair Haven community. Why pay taxes to a city government that can't guarantee a minimum level of safety?

If the police do not know who these guys are they must spend too much time hiding. I dont even live around the Chatham Square and I know they hang out on Downing near Lombard all the time.

It's not that they don't know, but it's extremely difficult to catch them IN the act, which is what is needed. All the repeat offenders are known, and some have been to court or even in juvenile detention, but a post on SCF is not enough to arrest someone and confiscate their bike.

By reporting where these cars ATV and dirt bikes are stored, your district manager can build a case for getting a search warrant and eventually they will be able to confiscate the machines. But, first they need to build a case. They need to gather evidence.

For example, in the Edgewood/Dwight Neighborhood it is Sgt. Steve Torquati at (203) 946-7597. In the Whalley, Edgewood, Beaver Hills (WEB) Neighborhood it is Lt. Makiem Miller at (203) 589-3318 or mmiller@newhavenct.net. They will investigate and can confiscate the vehicles.

You can also contact your LCI neighborhood specialist. In Edgewood/Dwight, contact Tracy Claxton at (203) 946-2857 or TClaxton@newhavenct.net.

If you want IMMEDIATE action, call the non-emergency (dispatch) NHPD phone number at 203-946-6316. Tell the dispatcher that your district manager (use their name) said to call and have some patrols sent to your area. Then ask the responding officer to CALL YOU BACK. This is very important. Otherwise, you call will fall into a black hole. By asking for a call back you are ensuring that the NHPD will take action and then be held accountable to you for what action is taken.

We need enough people to report these illegal machines, call the police, and work with their NHPD district managers. There are 100,000 of us in this city and only 100 or so of these dirt bike and ATV riders who are ruining our quality of life. We all need to raise this issue with our police and city government. With enough pressure, laws will change and policing tactics will adjust.
