Description
The problem is that few drivers respect the crosswalk at Gladstone, particularly at rush hour. The crosswalk is not as visible as it should be as well. Why can't there be a pedestrian light as there is at Dunkin Donuts on Mass Ave in North Cambridge? This morning one car had its nose in the crosswalk, while the 3/4 of the car in front was blocking the rest which left me with a narrow passage between in which to cross. I told the guy doing the lions share of the blocking that he was blocking the crosswalk. He looked incredulous and said "you're crazy, lady" like, why would I question his right to put his car in that lane over the crosswalk?
I think the crosswalk might work better if it were moved to the other side of Gladstone & Mass Ave. where there is a house and a red fire box. It's at the beginning of the painted street box where traffic is more likely to halt. And it's a little further from the Rt. 16 intersection which should make it function a little better. Cars are so anxious to get into that last segment of the road before the light.

We are unable to relocate the crosswalk, as that would require extensive reconstruction of all four corners of the intersection to accommodate the required accessible ramps and reconstruction of the median. We will consider this as a potential location for a future flashing crosswalk beacon.
We will refer this location to the Cambridge Police Department for directed enforcement.
Thank you for your report.
