For the past few months, random people keep going through my apartment's garbage cans right out on the street!! Probably looking for bottles and cans!!

I'm sorry, but this is unacceptable! If you want to collect bottles and cans, go find some along the side of the road, in empty lots, or in abandoned yards-- don't go rooting through my GARBAGE CANS!

This is just downright disgusting and LOW-CLASS!!!

Why don't the police stop this kind of nuisance?!?!

This has been common place in the downtown area forever. I guess they just are getting to your area now. Not just bottles and cans. If they have a bag with them, than most likely that is what they are after. If no bag, than they are searching for other stuff. Make sure you are not throwing away anything that identity thevies could use. There is a lot of that happening. Also, install a security camera ouside your house and have an outside monitoring service record it 24 hours a day. It sounds like there is a lot of crime in that area, and with the Lofts right around the corner, I am guessing all the resources are going to protect those buildings. Video is good evidence, even though it does not stop the crime. If you can keep your cans inside, or get a locking rubbermaid bin that will hold the cans, so they are only out on garbage day. Be proactive. I know it sucks.

Unfortunately I live in an apartment and am not allowed to have my own trash cans or install a security camera. I am a renter, and am forced to put up with this kind of nonsense. I mean, this little area of the city isn't really that bad, except maybe the loud music from the Polish Association on Friday and Saturday nights, or the fact that all the bar patrons take up parking spaces from all the people who live here, but it just irks me that people are picking through my garbage! It's not a huge deal, it's just very low-class. Hey, times are tough, I understand that. I collect bottles and cans from other people in my building, but I separate them before the regular trash goes out and then take them to Price Chopper to return the empties. I don't pick through other peoples' garbage cans looking for stuff! It's disgusting and the problem needs to be addressed.

I know this is a lot of work, but try to follow the people back to where they live. I am guessing this is someone in your neighborhood, unless they have a vehicle. If they have a vehicle, get a plate number, or a description and post it here. For a while there was an older blue ford van, like a 90, 0r 91, that was constatly doing this. They would haul away boxes and bags, even went through the local stores garbages and took rotten food. See if you can get more info. Putting a motion IP camera pointed out your window would be something you could do and get some pictures of who is doing this and post it here.

Are you serious? Poor people are picking through garbage and you want to install security cameras and follow them home? Are you all mentally ill? Let me guess - Christians? Yeah, that's what Jesus would do too. Install security cameras and tell them to crawl around the gutter. Losers.

This is a quality of life issue. Since most people bring the bottles back for the 5 cents, it makes me wonder what they are looking for in the trash ? Identity theft maybe ? And this is a gateway crime. People of this type in the area are not just looking through the trash, they are seeing who is home, is your car unlocked, maybe your basement door is not secured, anywhere that they can gain entry later.

Where I live, I have caught people taking the bags with them, obviously up to no good. If you can't lock the cans, or secure them, make sure you shread everything, or better yet, take it to work and throw it out there.

Better safe than sorry. I had my identity stolen and my bank account drained, in Cohoes, and when I reported it, I was told I was not the only one, and that several of my neighbors had the exact same things happen to them.
