I have found this material to also be dangerous. I have nearly fallen while walking in crosswalks as well in simply wet weather. This material used for pavement markings needs some reevaluation and reformulation to make it safe for use on roadways. It becomes very slippery when it is wet regardless of temperature. It needs some sort of abrasive or other traction component added to it. I think I have also had my car's tires briefly lose traction when hitting large patches of this marking material such as what is used in crosswalks. A different formulation should be found to use as crosswalk markings are renewed.

The wikipedia entry included in the original complaint discusses various paint formulations and how glass beads should be used to provide a rough surface where people walk.

I've also slipped several times on crosswalk markings, including one total wipe out when pavement was wet following a summer storm. Walking quickly when I fell, my head first momentum carried me across 2 lanes of pavement; as I slid to a stop 5 feet from the curb, both legs and one arm scraped and already bleeding, I watched the light turn green and was afraid I'd also be run over. I got up, limped away, and went to a store to ask for a bandaid - what a joke, I needed a hundred of them. It was only at my insistence that the store owner didn't call 911. Scabs and scars for the rest of that summer still remind me that something installed to assist "safe crossing" assures just the opposite when the surface is wet. Please...as previous posters have noted, there are ways to abate this situation.

The Wikipedia article you referenced, as noted by Wikipedia, has some concerns. The lack of citations and supporting documentation top among them. The article inaccurately represents the use of glass beads in pavement markings. Glass beads are used in all types of pavement marking materials to achieve reflective. The City uses glass beads in all pavement markings regardless of material type.

The crosswalk markings are dangerously slippery, forcing pedestrians to walk out side of the crosswalks during inclement weather. Taking cheap shots at wikipedia, does not constitute addressing the issue. The city has stated they are not choosing the paints for safety, but for durability. Reopening this issue.
