They will not loan new releases or certain DVDs to people who live outside the school district. If you visit the SS library and try to take out that book you've been wanting to read that just came out, or that feature film... you will be told you can not.

We support the schools, and we pay taxes. Our town's money is going to maintain and improve the roads to/from those schools. We sit behind the fumes of buses for these schools (in our town, in another district). These buses put wear and tear on our roads, use our lines, use our sewers, slow down our traffic with their school zones. These schools, of another district, directly impact our lives in our town and have the benefit of our town's money. We ALL from Wilton support that district in this way. The district supports the library. So, if I want to take out a DVD or new release, I should be able to.

Does the Saratoga district pay our town back to share the burden to plow these roads to make it possible to get these kids to their school?

Yeah this makes perfect sense, you should not have to pay taxes that run the library and then reap the benefits!

Wilton people are the biggest leaches ever!!

@JJ Booker... you obviously didn't read all the comments. It's the SSDS which reaps the benefits of Wilton town money. And, it's the SSDS which pays for the Library. We do support the district, with our resources.

Have fun getting your kids to school, in Wilton, if our town didn't want to plow/salt/sand the roads, on our dime.

SSDS doesn't support the library. There is a seperate line item on our taxes for 'Library tax'.

For me, it is almost $600/year.

Here is my point:

The library is the City library, not the school district library. They have seperate funding and are seperate entities. Just like the highway dept, police, and fire departments are sepearate entities.

FYI - I work in Clifton Park, so using the the Clifton Park/Halfmoon library is more convenient for me. They will not let me take out new releases or DVD's either. Do I complain about it? No, because I am getting a free benefit from them and if the people who actually pay for something gets first shot at the newest items, I am fine with that. It only makes sense.

My point that you don't seem to understand is the school district and the library are seperate entities. Personally, I will gladly give up the 'right' to take out new releases in exchange for my $600 back. That is a no brainer.

People within the SS School District pay that tax for the library. That's the district supporting the library. That's how it's decided who pays, you're in the school district, not in the town.

My point is your district is also in my town. Our town pays to support these schools, in our town, in your district. For that simple fact, we should be afforded the same rights to all of the *public* library as those who pay directly.

You may not be paying attention to what's being say, Jeremy. How about my town stops maintaining the roads in your school district. How about our water authority stops providing water and sewer to your schools in our town. How about your buses are kept off our roads so we have less wear/tear on them, less fumes and less stop-n-go.

You simply aren't grasping that we do pay for your schools, as they are in OUR TOWN. I bet there are some Town of Wilton trucks plowing in front of them, right now.

School district and City Library are not related. It doesn't matter who goes to what school since they are different animals.

How about you start an initiative to have you town start to contribute to the library or build your own?

I pay for water and sewers and buses through my taxes. You pay for water and sewers and buses through your taxes. I pay for an additional item entitled the library and you do not.

Like I said before, you get the sweet deal here. Free use of almost everything at no charge. I would gladly take that deal if I had that choice.

I understand your point, but it holds no water with me. I believe if you want something you pay for it. You can argue all you want about unrelated charges or services that you somehow justify your argument by linking together.

Anyway, neither of us are going to move from our position, so we aren't going to get anywhere with this. I am done. I made my points.

I don't see Saratoga Springs as having a snow day today. That must mean Wilton workers are working hard to clear the roads for Saratoga Schools. Who pays for that? Not you! What funds are making sure Saratoga kids get to schools in the Town of Wilton safely? That's right.. Wilton funds.

Jeremy, you don't and won't get it. The district and library ARE related since people in the DISTRICT pay taxes for the LIBRARY. Living in the city has nothing to do with it, it's living in the district. That's how the district and the library are related.

Original title: Library's selective loaning

Original issue: SSPL only loans all items to people who live within the SS School District, although these schools also lay withing other towns, and all citizens of those towns pay to support these schools (plowing, lines, sewer, etc...). Anyone who lives in a town which has a SS School District school in it should be allowed to take all items from the library.

Although I agree with Badger24 that the thread had turned into bickering, I thought I would add one item that would make the point somewhat moot. As a Clifton Park resident I pay separate taxes to support the Clifton Park Halfmoon Library. It is part of the Mohawk Valley & Southern Adirondack Library System as is the Saratoga Springs Public Library. If you are a member of any library of that system, you can borrow any item that shows up on the searchable catalog.

I have done so often and picked up the item at my library. It is possible, that they do "hold back" items from the catalog that can only be borrowed by residents but it has not been my experience.

But, that doesn't help those of us whose town pays to maintain the roads/lines/etc... for SS schools, in our town, because we happen to live outside the school district line. We also use the library, since it's close to us, yet we can't take out new releases.

The bickering happens because people don't seem to understand that there isn't much of a difference between having a specific line item on your taxes, and your town's funds paying for something. You may pay for the teachers and buses, but without our town funds they would have a pretty snowy, pot holed, drive in. They use our sewers, and our lines. These aren't paid for by your line-item taxes.
