  We should ask the city bans these scooters and birds. Often seen black teens ride scooters or birds as fast they can on the sidewalk, and also scooters got dump into the water.

  The problem is they don’t follow the rules. Most people ride scooters to work, bart, or wherever. But these black teens ride them for fun or it became a way for them to release anger.

  These are teens of all stripes. Full speed on sidewalks, wrong side of street, violating any and all traffic laws. The scooters tags state they are for use by people over the age of 18. Not that they have a clue how to ride.

  I'm a 72 year old who fears I'll be struck on a pedestrian sidewalk by a silent speeding scooter, but it's the conduct, not the ethnicity of the careless rider(s) that matters--along with the important issue of where the scooters should be permitted.

  I agree this is not a race or ethnicity issue. The issue is where these scooters should be allowed to operate. I’m a healthy 50 something and fortunately was able to sustain the violent blow of another full grown man being flung backward into me by the force of a 230 pound scooter rider traveling at 20mph. I am bruised and scraped up, but if I were a small child (I understood a two year old was hit recently), elderly (several elderly women were walking only about 15 yards behind me) or simply less fortunate as to how and where I landed, this incident could have been much worse. This is about where these scooters should be allowed to operate. NOT on sidewalks! NOT on Pedestrian paths! Bike lanes yes! Streets yes. I can see that the novelty joyride element for teens, young people and young at heart of all stripes is attractive and the sudden ubiquitousness of these devices is a siren call for many. The city simply needs to make very clear where they can and cannot be operated. PLEASE Oakland Mayor and City Council take immediate action to stop this dangerous nuisance now before too many others are seriously injured!

  I agree, I seen under 18 teens ride. I seen two people ride on a scooter. I see scooters all the time in the sidewalks speeding. I had to move scooters because a rider left them blocking the sidewalk. What a mess.

  Larry, I would also suggest you send this info to Lynette McElhaney. I am sending messages to all three scooter companies today regarding safety issues they need to address.
