owner of this business found an abandoned car in his lot and tried to report it to new haven police. they told him he would have to pay to have it towed from his yard without even wanted the plate # to check and see if it was reported stolen. It was stolen from west haven and undamaged at the time of the call, that night it started getting stripped and wrecked.... what would it have took to punch in 6 digits in to the system to check it. wonderful policy this is, such a shame and a waste that we could of had the car back before the damaged occured.

unfortunately dispatch thinks that they are the police and they like to determine what crimes merit investigation. I asked Rob Smuts & Chief Lewis to use tracking software to let citizens see what calls come in (like our lesser known cousin New Haven, Indiana) and they instead wanted me to look at a stupid software program that doesn't report out.
They know the dispatch stinks on ice. They know it's absolutely abysmal and horrid. However, they are absolutely unwilling to let it become public knowledge that the dispatchers are rude, ignorant, and out of line with callers.

I too have had problems with the dispatchers at NHPD. They are rude and dismissive. Recently I filed a complaint with internal affairs about a bigger problem I had with NHPD. I mentioned that it was difficult to get the officer on my case to return my calls and that I'd left several messages. The internal affairs officer (who was incredibly professional) said that I was lucky to get a return call. She said that the dispatchers hand-write notes (on paper!) and physically hand them to the officer. If the officer and the dispatcher don't overlap, they often just get thrown away. This is obviously a big digression from the issue you raise, but there are apparently huge problems with this system. It's like they're living in some very lazy version of the dark ages.
Anyway, i hope that you will file a complaint. The link explaining how to do this can be found here: http://www.cityofnewhaven.com/police/Divisions/InternalValuesEthics.asp . I'm sure it won't amount to much but at least it will be one more complaint about this horrible system.
Your case is just ridiculous. In the end it will require more work and time and money from the police and many other people. such a shame.
