I agree that the situation on Olive Street, basically a bicycle- and pedestrian-unfriendly speedway through a dense neighborhood of families and children, is completely unacceptable given the volume of pedestrians there. Please sign the petition at www.newhavensafestreets.org to ensure that this kind of planning is not overlooked in the future, and that measures are taken to ensure the safety of all road users and ensure the long-term well-being of our fair city. Speed limits must be immediately reduced along Olive if we want to save lives. In the meantime please continue to call your state and local elected officials about traffic safety issues like this one; this will eventually help increase their priority. Also, is there a way to move this "marker" to the correct map location?

Will an in-road yield to pedestrian sign, like the ones up on State Street, be added to this intersection?

This corner requires a light or a 4 way stop sign preferbly a light this would prevent people pulling from Court on to Olive from getting t-boned because the cant see through the parked vehicals on Olive mainly my big brown truck sorry to all its the only place I can park

Reducing travel speeds on Olive Street would be a good first step that would solve a lot of the other problems, which are closely related. There are many ways to do this.

Top speeds on Olive should really be about 15mph if you want the street to be a place that contributes to the economic development of the neighborhood, not detracts from it.

Additionally, paint can be used to pull back parking from the intersection, which would help improve visibility. This is called intersection "daylighting." The city already did this and it made a big difference, but I'd say they could be even more aggressive with it. The catch is that in addition to daylighting the intersection, speeds need to be reduced, because the increased visibility tends to produce a slight increase in speed on the part of drivers (since they feel more comfortable speeding if they know they can more easily see pedestrians popping off the curb).

This crossing is a menace. Bus drivers are the worst. Feels like they speed up and aim for puddles to splash me when it is raining.

Could anyone from the City comment on this? We've been talking about it for a long time, and it's still a huge problem and a danger to public safety. Why no stop signs, for example? This seems an inexpensive fix, and after all, it's a residential-scale street in a residential neighborhood.

Another week, another speeding accident at this intersection. There are still pieces of car lying around, with a big chunk missing from a nearby tree. This time at least there seem to have been no pedestrians involved. Any reason why one couldn't at least install stop signs here?

If Olive Street is scheduled to be converted into part of the Farmington Canal Trail on-road walking & bicycling route between Orange Street and New Haven Harbor, it is a good opportunity for more comprehensive traffic calming.

In the subsequent years since this issue was created the city has installed a RRFB (rectangular rapid flashing beacon) crosswalk signal at this location which has greatly assisted pedestrians in crossing Olive at this location.
