I thought maybe I had become a curmudgeon, but after speaking with other friends and neighbors in the Chatham Square neighborhood, it's clear I'm not the only one who's sick of the ice cream truck. I don't know what the truck looks like, because I was afraid I would confront the driver (and not nicely) if I bothered to go out and check, but there is an ice cream truck that not only drives around with music blaring, but also has that horrible recorded "Hello!" bellowing well past 9:30 p.m. many nights, including weeknights. I make my children go to bed at 9:00 p.m., and I don't make it much longer, so this is a major annoyance, to say the least. All of my other friends who are parents find this after hours ice cream truck ridiculous and annoying, too. Is there some sort of noise ordinance against this? I would hate to egg the ice cream man, but I'm getting really close to doing it!

THANK YOU for posting this. That "HELLO!" totally creeps me out. Not to mention I've got that song permanently stuck in my head. I don't know if I'll ever get it out again.

i couldn't agree more - its a major annoyance and so inappropriate to try and lure kids out for ice cream that late at night! i for one will keep my eyes peeled for the truck and try and get the company name and find a phone number - if i do, i'll post it here and we can each call and lodge our own personal complaint

ps the other night it was playing silent night?! what is that about?

This is not the Mr. Softee truck, if that helps, but it's a painted white van decorated with Shrek and a couple of other stickers. The driver is eastern European and the letters of his name (or the company name?) is stuck on the driver's door. This is the first year I've heard or seen this particular driver and his admittedly annoying music. Are there any permit or even noise requirements for ice cream trucks?

This same truck comes to Quinnipiac Avenue, where I live. I asked the guy who was sitting in the truck if he could please turn the music down. He shrugged and didn't turn it down. I appreciate that the owner is trying to make a living, but he needs to realize that he is annoying potential customers, like me. He needs to make his presence known so people will buy ice-cream. He just needs to lower the volume, especially when he parks in one place for 5-10 minutes."Hellloooo, Tweet, Tweet, Tweet, Tweet."

He comes into Hidden Quarry and plays that music time and time again.
He has no right to be here in the first place.

The music and that HELLO has got to go.

this is an issue in East Shore too -- this same truck comes to the park frequently. It's really a nuisance!

The ice cream truck continues to torture us. I was driving past Chatham Square Park at 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday night, and there it was. I passed it just in time to have "Hello!" screamed at me. Unfortunately, I think there is an ordinance that allows the ice cream truck to operate and "broadcast" music until 10:00. I am all for entrepreneurship, but an ice cream truck soliciting business when most kids are likely in bed and well after dark is not only annoying, but, in my opinion, also dangerous. I am concerned drivers will not see our community's kids heading for the truck in the dark. Can someone from the City please advise us about how to address this?

i have heard an icrecream truck come around chatham and atwater way past 930 but i guess most people around here dont seem to be bothered because many spend their time on their porches with young children assuming its because its hot inside the house or its the summer time and lets not forget the favorite line, "This is fair haven' anything goes mentality so the handful of us that are bothered by the noise and live with some sort of respect in our community can go and maybe find a way for the annoying truck to cut the music after a certain time but i still much rather hear the music of a truck than the parade or cars with the systems and the burning out of tires at all times of day and nite

Oy. This truck makes me so angry. The noise in the park and the car racing on the street has greatly decreased this year. . .and now, this truck blares that freaky "hello" at 9:45 at night.
Please, tell me how to make it stop.

The truck itself looks like a conversion van with garish stickers all over it.

The last place I lived in Texas had a similar problem. Except that I ultimately found out that the truck wasn't selling only ice cream, which explained its unusual hours and the fact that I saw adults at the truck much more frequently than kids. Yikes.

As of this past weekend, he has changed the music on the truck and there is no longer that annoying "hello." Guess he got the message!

I just want to know who the "HELLLLLO!" lady is. She sounds like the neighbor who used to just walk in the house without knocking when I was growing up. My mother would be horrified. Could it be?

The makeshift ice cream van makes rounds on Front Street around 10pm on a fairly regular basis. Yes, very annoying to try to get kids to bed with that truck driving around. Fortunately my son finds the truck creepy and annoying at this point. Pretty sad when a kid doesn't want anything to do with the ice cream truck.
I have seen him stopped at the Waucoma Yacht Club on occasion but adults were buying ice cream. Yes, he plays the music while customers buy their treats.

Hey this guy gets around all over the place. I saw it parked on Forbes Ave last night. I know the image on the left front door is supposed to be Shrek but it reminds me more of those cartoon characters in the TV commercial for the MUCOUS product, whatever it's called. Think about it.

He seems to have turned down the volume and has definitely gotten rid of the creepy "hello". If the city allows them to operate until 10pm I guess this is going to have to be enough.

I second the plate because I am wondering if it is the same truck that blocks my street. When I go home today, I will record the plate to see if it matches what you all are seeing.
