Description

Chabot Road is used as a thoroughfare and there are many potholes along it between College Ave and the Chabot Rec Center. It is in severe need of repair and/or complete repaving.

The City of Oakland Public Works Agency has received this issue. It is registered as service request # 454146. Thank you, in advance, for your patience as we work through a backlog of pothole service requests. Unfortunately the City does not have enough funding to repave all streets in poor condition. With limited funding, our response to resurfacing requests is limited to minor pavement and pothole repairs only. Our Street Maintenance Department will assess your street and determine whether temporary measures might be appropriate. Please understand that this work may be limited to pothole or other minor repairs, and that we have many similar requests. We will do our best to respond in a timely manner. The backlog of streets in Oakland needing pavement currently is $435 million and growing.

Have to admit, driving on Chabot Rd. in Oakland nothing short of a disaster. Occasionally have trouble steering through the potholes... which is especially scary considering how many children walk to and from school in this area.

I frequently ride my bike on this stretch of road. I typically ride 80 miles a week. I have to say that this stretch of road is one of the worst I have encountered in Oakland. It is particularly dangerous given that kids ride this stretch of road going to sporting activities and going to and from school. Please expedite this service request.

It is very dangerous to navigate this road by car or by bicycle (and it is a bike route!). It is also a heavily trafficked street. Fixing this road would have a great impact on many Oakland residents.

The potholes on Chabot are so bad I routinely weave around them to spare my shocks - watching traffic, of course, but it just makes driving on the road more dangerous as someone coming in the other direction may be doing the same.

The pothole should have been an issue in the past mayoral campaigns and will definitely be one in the next one. Take pictures of neighborhood potholes and send them to the editor of the Rockridge News.

The other comments properly describe the terrible and dangerous pothole situation on Chabot Road. One thing further. I clicked on the link and looked at the Nov 2007 five year plan for paving. Chabot Road was not even listed. Now that the first 5 year plan (I trust that the Chinese Communist party is more efficient at meeting their goals in their five year plan), I would like to see a link to a current five year plan established by Public works. Perhaps, I missed it

In additional to being a hazard for drivers and bikers, the potholes are also hazardous for pedestrians crossing Chabot Road, especially elderly people. Some potholes are so deep a person could very easily sprain or break an ankle.

I would be interested in knowing how a small, lightly traveled street in Crocker Highlands (Underhills Road) merited a complete paving two years ago. At the time this street was paved it was not even close to the extreme disrepair in which we find Chabot Road today.

It is disgraceful that a road as heavily traveled as Chabot is should have been allowed to get to the condition that currently exists. Please be sure to include filling its potholes in the current pothole blitz.

Last month we spent $900 to repair our car after a part was sheared off after hitting a pot hole on Chabot Road (near the Priory). PLEASE pave this entire road.

Minor repair will not solve anything. That entire stretch of road needs to be ground up and repaved completely. You really have to see it and drive or ride on it to believe it. THis is a major drop off point for parents with children, and it is the ONLY bicycle commuter route between the Oakland Hills and Berkeley. Cyclists and motorists are a danger to each other and to pedestrians as they have to pay much more attention to the road than to what is ahead. Please repair thoroughly asap. Thank you.

I've ridden this stretch on my road bike and received a flat - the condition of this road is a disgrace as is Broadway and Shafter - all routes bikers use - fix these!

Good news, it looks like the contract that the Chabot Rd street paving is on was approved and is very likely to be completed this year in 2014! This will include the entire stretch of road from College Ave to Golden Gate Ave, and bicycle shared-lane markings will be painted once the paving is complete.

On top of that Oakland has initiated a "pothole blitz" with the intention of filling 2,500 potholes around the city, starting in East Oakland and then moving northwest throughout the next several months. I'm not sure which project will get to Chabot first, but at least there is a lot of movement in a positive direction.

paintrich: Broadway between 38th and Broadway Terrace is also going to be repaved and striped with bike lanes (by this October) and Shafter is getting resurfaced using some discretionary funds from District 1 Councilperson Dan Kalb's office

The blitz never took place and I haven't heard of any plans to remedy in 2014. I saw two more people with flat tires last week. Ugh.

LB: I know it's hard to wait but the paving work on Chabot Rd is still planned to take place before the end of 2014. Most paving work usually does end up taking place at the very end of the year, as the city works with the contractors to not start their work until all scheduled utility projects have been completed. Otherwise the utility workers end up just cutting into the newly paved street.

The pothole blitz did take place over the summer, by the way, and a majority of the holes that I had reported on other streets were taken care of at that time.
