I understand there may be some improvements slated for LATE THIS YEAR, but if they could just do a couple quick fixes this summer it would really help us.
Specifically:
1) Cut the curb next to Tarallo field for wheelchair access (36" wide)
2) Repave/level the handicapped spot at Tarallo so it's not a giant lake for days on end after it rains.
3) Make a 3 foot wide crushed dust path to the bleachers at Rull Field - instead of the giant rocks there now.
Seriously, just those 3 small things would be a tremendous help for the wheelchair bound.
Thank you for your concern, this issue has been received by our department. Currently, DPW Managers and Building Dept. staff are discussing possible access improvements at Hollingsworth Park. We will keep the public updated via Commonwealth Connect. Thank you for reporting this.
The Highway Dept. has installed an asphalt access path to both home/visitor bleacher areas at Rull Field. Several phases of access improvements in the lower playing fields have been planned for the future also to include:
- Installation of two accessible parking spaces with crosswalk directly across from Rull Field
- Curb cut and new accessible parking space painted and access path installed to Tarrello Field and home/visitor bleacher areas
- Installation of concrete sidewalk from accessible parking at Brooks to Rull Fields with appropriate safety fence
- Stripe a pedestrian access pathway from Rull to Tarrello Fields
The Town's Highway Department has made some additional improvements at Hollingsworth Park to include striping a shared pedestrian path of travel and crosswalks from Pond St. to Tarello field. Additionally, staff removed sections of any speed humps intersecting with the pedestrian shared lane of travel that create access barriers. Additional signage will be added in the coming weeks and a long term plan is still in progress.
