Thanks for the comment. I just reported on some problems on 13th Ave, in front of Edna Brewer, though there are other problemns on 13th Ave.

I complained about the number and depth of these potholes over a year ago. I was pleased to see the City responded within two weeks, but only filled a few of them. The repairs could hardly be called adequate; the holes were back within weeks. It was as if they were never touched. This continues to be an awful road, which caused me to slow to 10 omp and weave in and out of two lanes to avoid getting a blowout, which happened last year!!

You're right. The city did fill some potholes. But this street is so bad that the entire street needs to be repaved.

I agree that trying to patch up Chatam Road is just not going to work and is a waste of money. Repaving should be done as soon as possible for reasons of traffic safety. It is really hard to steer a car down this cow path!

Potholes are getting deeper and deeper.

Potholes are continuing to grow. This giant pothole is damaging vehicles in the right lane next to 1362 Chatham. It needs to be taken care of before it causes an accident, because cars are swerving into the other lane to avoid it.

City of Oakland Public Works Agency addressed this issue on 12/04/2013, service request # 437828.

Unfortunately, Chatham is still a failed street. I suspect that a few potholes have been fixed, but the street is still a mess, with potholes, unevenly filled potholes, and cracks running along the street. Hubcups litter the side of the street, probably lost when hitting one of the many potholes.

Chatham is a commonly used road for entering 580 West, and receives a lot of traffic. Many AC Transit buses also use this route.

Chatham needs to be repave3d, just as MacArthur was repaved on the opposite side of the 580. I will load a few photos taken today.

The large pothole that I took a photo of was filled, and I assume that is why this issue was closed, but it should not have been. There is another open pothole in the lane next to it that is not filled. There is another pothole just a short ways past that filled pothole that is open and growing. My picture from 11/09/13 was trying to illustrate the immediate danger that the physical deterioration of the street was causing, and that it was not just an inconvenience or monetary damage. I saw cars swerving and nearly causing accidents to avoid that huge pothole.

However, the street itself needs to be extensively patched or completely repaved. This street has an incredibly high volume of traffic with large vehicles including city buses, and the number of potholes and deteriorated areas on the street are beyond the capabilities of this website to document, since there are not sufficient addresses on the street to pinpoint their locations. I would urge the city to reconsider repaving this street.

You are right. There is high traffic, but the city does not have any study of that traffic. I will try to convince the city to measure the traffic. I suspect that the city forgot that MacArthur is one way in this area, and that MacArthur is the other half of the traffic. MacArthur is on the repaving plan, Chatham is not.

The storm drain system along Buckingham Blvd upslope from Bristol Drive failed again last night, and clogged the inlet at Buckingham and Bristol, which, in turn, damaged my property at 7008 Bristol. I am requesting an immediate fix. Public Works staff has been aware of this problem for 4 years.

This is the second time that the city of Oakland has closed this ticket. The street needs to be repaved. It has not been repaved. Please specify what has been fixed and why the city believes that Chatham is now free of potholes.

Agree with Kevin Dalley. Whatever small potholes may have been repaired today (and I saw the city maintenance vehicle today, thank you), this street needs extensive work and many potholes remain. It is a hazard to cars and bicycles and any other users.

Due to the danger to cyclists, this issue is being submitted to Oakland as a "TOP 10" for immediate attention under an agreement with the Bike East Bay Hazard Elimination program. The program is pothole-specific, so the overall failed-street condition won't be addressed. However, let's hope the worst pothole(s) can be filled to make it safer for cyclists.

I also agree with Kevin Dalley's multiple requests to stop closing the tickets to replace the road surface on Chatham Road. It is beyond reason that these few blocks cannot be paved. Our city streets have sunk to the level of a third world status. The way the City of Oakland continues to defer road maintenance all over the city, soon it will require 30 or more years to "catch up" with the out of control urban road decay. Are we the next Detroit?

I drove down this street this evening. There are dozens of deep potholes all over Chatham. Still. I am not sure which, if any, potholes were filled. Please stop closing this ticket unless all of these can be addressed and repaired, or preferably, if the street can be repaved. Over the weekend I saw a bicyclist being loaded into an ambulance on a backboard at the corner of Chatham and Beaumont. This street is not safe.

Thank you Mr. Dalley and Oaklander for your efforts. Since Public Works is clearly not going to voluntarily pave this "cow path" anytime soon, the issue might be better addressed to our new mayor. Some of politicians downtown have informed the residents of Oakland that "Oakland is booming". This "boom" including an orgy of graffiti, illegal dumping, and an increasing number of rooting streets, like Chatham Road. Another example is my street, Randolph Avenue, that has not been paved for OVER 50 years, over half a century!

This a major bus route! Why isn't it a priority? Next thing you know we will have buses with broken axles and I bet no money to fix them. See: BART

This street is dangerous. There are at least ten large potholes between the westbound exit at 14th St. and Park Blvd. This is the route one has to take getting off the freeway westbound if you are going to Park Blvd. You have to swerve back and forth to avoid damaging your vehicle. How this street is not on the 5-year repair list is beyond comprehension.

Like Auntles said, it is a dangerous road, made worse but the recent rains. Having driven down it recently, I was forced to straddle the lanes to avoid the numerous holes. I've also had buses come close to swiping me as they try to go around them. Pretty bad if a bus doesn't want to hit it. With all of the private vehicles and buses that use this stretch, it needs to be pushed up in line of priority.

Public Works will continue to ignore this unless you reach out to the mayor and council members, which I did earlier this year, resulting in the road being patched. Abel Guillen's chief of staff, Richard Raya got right on it, coordinating with Noel Gallo's office. On Chatham at Park Blvd, there were the following counts for motor
vehicles traveling on Chatham, some going straight, some turning left,
some turning right:

Kevin is quite right. Dozens and dozens of residents have complained over the years about Chatham Road. The deplorable condition of this street is appalling. It is little better than a cow path. Worse than the condition of this street is the lack of initiative by the City Council to show effective leadership to acquire adequate funding to renew our rotting infrastructure in the City of Oakland.

Chatham is in district 5, Noel Gallo's district.
He agreed that this street justifes repavement more than most of the streets which he examines.

He put it on the district 5 list, to be discussed. There are 19 other streets in district 5.
Unfortunately, the priorities are strange, but logical. It is cheaper to fix a street which is in fairly good shape. Once a street is in bad shape, it falls on the list, but some of the worst streets get fixed. Chatham is now on the list.

Absolute best case would be one year away, but that's only if Chatham is on the top of the list. It definitely deserves to be near the top, but there are other streets.

There is an infrastructure bond on the ballot in November. That will help get money for street repair.

Also, call Noel Gallo to mention this street. He's allowed to add input to which streets deserve repaving.

And Gallo is up for election this year.

Contacting Councilmember Noel Gallo's office is indeed the best step to getting this addressed, as council members get to program about 20% of the available paving funding each year for "worst streets" that are not on the official 5 year paving plan.

I also recommend that everyone look into and consider voting for the Oakland infrastructure bond that will be on the ballot this November, which will enable the city to catch up to the deferred pavement maintenance backlog quicker, and actually save money and be more efficient as a result.

Oakland is short on money. Without money, we can't keep up on infrastructure repair.

The infrastructure bond should help fund some of Oakland's shortfall. There are many reasons Oakland has been behind on money. The recession, the earthquake, proposition 13. With our current repaving budge, it takes 85 years to pave all of the streets. We're stuck with the group yelling the loudest getting what they want. Yes, I'm yelling, but I also want to provide money for the subject of my yelling.

We have had some repaving done in the area.

Beaumont, Excelsior, and MacArthur have all been paved in the last few years.

Chatham slipped through the cracks. I tried and failed to raise its priorities a few years ago. I placed my notes here.

Today, I think that I did raise the priority. Jimmy Mach does a good job with the repaving, but he can't do everything with the money he has.

Please, talk to Noel Gallo about this.

Chatham is one of the busiest, poor quality streets in district 5.

Please place Chatham at the top of the district 5 worst streets.

Chatham is an arterial road with a 2016 PCI score of 28. I recently
discussed Chatham with Jimmy Mach. He agreed that Chatham is a street
that is should be placed high on the list of streets to be repaved.

Because Chatham is in such poor shape, many drivers talk Excelsior
instead of Chatham, taking them by Edna Brewer Middle School, which
places our students at risk. Starting in August, Edna Brewer is the
place where Glenview Elementary students are picked up and dropped
off. We need to move traffic away from Edna Brewer.

Excelsior is an Oakland bicycle route. We need to encourage heavy
motorized traffic to be on streets which are not bicycle
routes. Repaving Chatham will encourage motorized traffic to use
Chatham.

Chatham is a one way street, northwest bound. Its sister street is
MacArthur, southeast bound. MacArthur has already been repaved. It is
time for Chatham to be repaved.

There was a traffic count on Thursday, February 23, 2006, for Chatham
at Park Blvd:

7-9AM 1708 vehicles

Councilmember Gallo, please repave Chatham Road.

I find it hard to believe that the city is that short on money when property taxes go up every single year and we keep voting to give the city more money with measures XY and Z. Not to mention the onslaught of new residents flooding our city and purchasing homes. I understand that things take time to fix, but the wait to fix Chatham is ridiculous. The city clearly has other priorities.

Imperfectindeed, property taxes are artificially depressed by Prop 13, so newcomers with recently purchased homes may end up seeing big tax bills, but not the majority of Oaklanders who are taxed for a fraction of their homes' worth. The gas tax has also not kept up with inflation, and with more electric cars, hybrids, and greater efficiency people are driving more than before and putting more wear on the roadways but contributing less funding to maintenance per mile traveled.

This doesn't have much to do with Chatham, specifically, but there are many miles of other similarly bad streets in Oakland which have been allowed to crumble and become increasingly expensive to fix, specifically because of our short-sighted taxation priorities in Califoria. A total fix will require property and transportation tax overhauls on the state and national level, but Oakland is doing the best it can locally by stretching every dollar and proposing local funding via things like the already adopted Measure BB, and the proposed infrastructure bond this November. No, it's not ideal, but this is the best chance we have to deal with all the deferred maintenance and save money in the long run.

Guilty as charged,Robert. After living in the same house for 30 years, I pay very little in property taxes. It goes up every year, but not by much. I could put in extra money, but I don't.

To make it worse, I'm not driving as much, I cycle and take public transportation more. Good news, less wear and tear on streets. Bad news, less money to repair streets.

Imperfectindeed, please contact Gallo and ask him to put Chatham high on the district 5 list of worst streets. Streets on this list will get paved. Gallo can solve the problem for Chatham, because it really is one of the worst streets in district 5.

Gallo himself can't solve the bigger issue, without more money to spend. But Gallo can get this one street repaved.

Councilmember Gallo has placed Chatham on the district 5 worst streets list. I believe that brings the total to 20 streets. I asked Gallo to tell us where Chatham lies on the list.

If Chatham is at the top of the list, it will take a year to repave. If at the bottom, who knows.

Chatham (along with other streets) is "currently under design and cleared from utility companies. This work will be part of a Citywide paving project with advertisement for bids planned later this Fall and anticipating construction to begin next Spring."

Noel Gallo did push to have Chatham repaved, after many of us asked him to put Chatham on the list

Well, it was supposed to have been repaved by Spring, 2017.

If it was repaved, it fell apart pretty quickly.

It was patched, as it has been many times, but definitely not repaved. We drove it the other day, dodging deep potholes. It's dangerous: when will it be re-paved?

I just heard that the city is scheduling the repaving of Chatham. Don't know the planned date yet.

What a relief. So far, I have only crossed Chatham by bike. It looks good.

I actually haven't looked at this thread for a while because it was so depressing, but I drove on Chatham recently and was thrilled with the lack of bone-rattling craters in the roadbed.

Does it still need the lanes and crosswalks painted?

I noticed the lack of lane stripes.

It's been striped but does anyone think they put the center too far to the left? It's a couple feet from where it was prior to repaving.

Did they move the center to the left to allow room for bicycles? I don't usually cycle Chatham, but when I do I want speeding cars as far away from me as possible.

The center is also a bit uneven.

I am probably OK with closing this ticket.

Strangely, Oakland has closed 1300 tickets without checking the status, but hasn't closed this ticket yet.
