I don't have off street parking. I parked on the even side. The town should have put in a better parking ban sooner and enforced it.

I think the city understands that getting all the cars off the streets just isn't realistic. As much as many of us would like to make things work better, In a city with many multifamily dwellings, and several drivers per unit, there is simply not enough off-street parking. That's just something we all have to live with, without sniping at each other. Parking before a storm in a public lot which may be a hefty walk from one's home is not always an easy solution either. Also, since traditionally there are many streets that are never really well-plowed, you might still come home and have to shovel out a space. It reminds me of the person that told me I shouldn't complain about the difficulty of on-street parking, because I should have bought a home with a driveway (duh ... doesn't everyone live in the best place they can afford?). Jeromy, sorry this happened. Call your insurance company, and file a police report with the city. These things happen, and it will work out.

STORM 101 - I come from the state of Maine - snow is our business. If we implemented what Portland Maine does during storms we wouldnt have nearly the same issues we deal with here. DURING a storm we park on the odd numbered side of the street, in school/church/state run parking lots with free shuttles as long as possilble - shuttles bring us back from 5 o 7am because we are to be out of the lots by 7am. The FOLLOWING day of the storm, we park on the even side of the street. They have closed down one city run lot and had truck dump snow in that lot closing it off to any vehicle use until it melts away. WHY DONT WE DO THIS HERE?!?!!?!?!? Ive been trying to get this state to listen to this for years and no one does.

the city put out a request before the storm that people park on the even side of the street and also released a list of city parking lots where parking would be free during the storm. Maybe the problem is that we aren't doing a better job of making a big deal of it, so everyone knows about it and everyone does it -- need to do a campaign so it is common knowledge that we will implement this every time a major storm comes -- matter of education

In order for the odd-even approach to work and to take it seriously, it would have to be carried out as reliably as STORM says it is done in Portland, and that simply isn't the case in New Haven. My first two years in this city I tried to follow the odd/even rule, but the city usually didn't plow the odd side the first day when I had to get to work, nor the even side the second day, so I was left having to dig myself out of the even side to get to work, then dig another space back in to the odd side in front of my house when the space on the even side was taken. Even in much lighter storms, with a few inches on the ground, the city has simply not done a good job of cleaning up. As for parking in downtown garages, New Haven is not safe enough to ask people to walk several miles at 6 in the morning to get to a downtown garage to take their cars to work. And the garages charged as soon as the declared emergency was over, even if my street had not been plowed. Case in point, Mansfield street is still not plowed, but the garages will begin to charge at the end of the day tomorrow, If I didn't need the car to get to work I would be happy to be rid of the worry during a storm, but city services need to become more reliable if people are going to accept strategies like this. We need to be mindful of the fact that many, many city residents don't have off-street parking, and their livelihoods depend on personal transportation. As far as this particular storm, the real problem is that there was too much snow for the limited resources we have. Even Yale, which normally has their entire campus and the surrounding streets cleaned immediately, is far behind in their clean-up.
