I agree that Alumni Hall's new HVAC system on the roof is incredibly noisy. And NO, I am not going to move drom my home of 15 years, when there is an easier and better solution - the party that installed this new machine put on noise dampeners. The machine is for their convenience, they should fix the problem.

This large HVAC sounds like a LARGE ship arriving to the shore. Quite a noise !! After a while, it is annoying. Noise dampeners are a great suggestion.

Is there such a thing as a noise dampener? I don't think so short of them building a room around the unit (which I seriously doubt would ever occur).

The constant whirl of the whine is akin to a drill constantly grinding and grinding and grinding. This sound will not blend easily into the background city white noise anytime soon. Jefferson University owes it not only to their neighbors, but also patients, employees and students to address this issue sooner rather than later.

Noise is worse than ever. Will be inescapable come warmer weather if anyone in the neighborhood opens their windows or wants to sit outdoors. Have not heard from any public officials or officials from Jefferson University. What happens once an issue is posted onto this site?

I doubt anyone at Jeff even knows this site exists.

I am not an engineer or knowledgeable about exchangers, so cannot even hazard an answer to your question. However, I would appreciate Jefferson hire an engineer to look into the problem and come up with a solution whether it means a minor fix such a turn of a screw or a major noise dampening installation. All I know is that it is that it is a major nuisance and is probably not working properly if it is creating such a constant high loud whine. I can see exchangers on roofs elsewhere and not hear such a noise.

My point is that o don't think there's a solution as easy as that, and there msy be no solution.

Where would be a good place to stand so one can hear this noise?

You guys could always send this discussion around to any contacts, friends, or community organizations who might be able to move the chains and get it in front of more eyes, possibly an engineer!

Sound is most noticeable south of the exchanger once visible on the roof on Alumni hall. Try 200 block of 11th or 200 block of Jessup.

I bet they're just changing the system from heat to coolant, it'll probably start back up again soon.

To Ben - good idea but why not call the building manager?

The building manager was notified by my neighbor. I hope it is solved and not, as you say, a hiatus between seasons. Time will tell. Thank you everyone for your support on this issue.
