A sinkhole opened at the crosswalk in front of 470-472 Madison Ave. in the spring. It was filled, but began sinking again right away.
Residents have reported this to the proper department repeatedly without response. The area is deceiving because it doesn't seem like a deep dip at first glance and is difficult to capture in a photograph, but it continues to cause the following significant issues:
Because it is directly in the crosswalk, people with walkers and wheelchairs have a difficult time getting over the "lip."
People have caught their foot and tripped repeatedly here, including children and including in heavy traffic.
Heavy vehicles, especially those with a trailor, crash down into the dip causing a loud metalic bang all day and all night long impacting quality of life and disturbing the sleep of residents.
When a truck or heavy vehicle hits the lip of the sunken area, it is with such force that, in addition to the sound, it shakes the buildings along that block, again, all day and all night.
A structural engineer acquaintance stated that this is causing damage to historic buildings/homes with plaster walls, etc. whether visible yet or not as they are not intened to withstand this ongoing shaking.
