Rob, about the last part of your comment - the turn signal on Whitaker Mill Road is a flashing yellow arrow which just means that you are allowed to turn when traffic isn't coming from Fairview (safer than a green ball since people aren't looking at times before turning left there)

Obviously a yellow flashing turn signal means you can make a left turn however you cannot turn when there is a constant flow of incoming traffic. This backs up Whitaker Mill. Gleenwood timing is also off for north bound lanes

The city and NCDOT's stance on Whitaker Mill has been that they will not give that movement a protected left turn arrow because it increases the delay and backups on Glenwood which is the main street there - I know some people in the community are pursuing a project to extend the thru/right turn lane on Whitaker Mill so vehicles making that left aren't blocking cars from going straight or right which will help reduce the backups on Whitaker Mill. Just some background info in case the city never replies.

There is not enough stacking distance on Whitaker Mill westbound at the intersection. Waiting left turners fill the queue and pinch off the straight/right turn lane. The result is no one moves and the back-ups extend regularly past McCarthy and sometimes past Bickett. There really needs to be a brief dedicated left arrow at the start of the cycle for Whitaker Mill westbound to Glenwood southbound to clear that short queue so the other lane can release. Because the queue is so short the dedicated left arrow need not be long.

I agree Rob that the northbound Glenwood timing seems to have changed - there have been increased backups during the 5-6 PM hour (that I've noticed) since the new signal mast arms were installed.

I heartily agree with the foregoing--brief left-turn arrow for W.Mill traffic turning south on Glenwood would help a lot.

I wonder what would happen if they did the protected left arrow for Whitaker Mill traffic every other or every 3rd cycle just the get the queue moving during rush hours.

Staff checked traffic signals within the Glenwood 5 Points area and all appear to be functioning properly. Staff will monitor the corridor, evaluate the current signal timings, and make adjustments that may improve traffic progression within the area.
