I know, but the traffic fatalities and injuries lately indicate something more substantial is needed. It's a good idea what you suggest if the damage was less frequent.

I agree for the need for some solution. What about just using a traffic signal that is keyed to a button like the one on Oak Avenue Expressway near Blue Ravine? That seems the best of both worlds.

I am guessing that the solution you suggest Dan, may be more costly to implement/maintain than the traditional measures. Also, these ground level lights you suggest probably work best when there is a large sight distance. Golf Links is on an incline and a curve, decreasing the sight distance and probably making it harder to see lights at ground level compared to the traditional above ground lights. Dan, I agree that having more traffic signals and stop signs is undesirable, and probably unnecessary for the majority of the day. I like Vik's idea of having a pedestrian signal actuated by a button. That way everyone is not stopping at all times --- only when there are pedestrians. But clearly, SOMETHING has to be done!

There is a traffic signal planned at this intersection. It was a condition of approval on a nearby development project that has not started yet. It is my understanding that the signal is already under design and will probably be bid for construction sometime this winter or spring 2017. A ped only signal would not work at this location because it is an intersection of two streets; the Oak Avenue example that was cited works because it is a mid-block crossing location. The City has also looked into the in-pavement crosswalk lights and found, like many agencies, that they aren't effective enough to warrant the high maintenance cost. Thank you all for the suggestions and the constructive dialogue. I will be closing this item again because there is not an existing signal equipment issue that requires maintenance, but please feel free to continue the discussion.

Thank you for the explanation of the different options. I would like to suggest that the new light be keyed to traffic and not on a timer, just in case that was happening. I'm looking forward to seeing traffic control at the park, though!
