This weekend I took a friend down to the Greenway / Riverwalk off Division Street. Honestly, because it's longer I often will walk the Derby/Shelton side but we decided to start on the Ansonia side to see how far it goes (not nearly far enough..)

That said, we were stunned that the Ansonia side of the greenway is covered with dog poop. It's scattered all over one end to the other. We had to keep walking around it. We assumed this was an issue the greenway was having universally. WRONG!

We then crossed Division to walk the Derby/Shelton end. SPOTLESS! There wasn't even a piece of trash on the Derby or Shelton portions of the greenway. Ansonia, trash and dog droppings!

I know it's the owner's responsibility to clean this up, but clearly it is not happening at all. How Ansonia offices have not noticed it's greenway is filthy and Derby's is spotless escapes me but my hope is this message will get perhaps Public Works to add cleaning up the greenway to it's list of projects regularly. No, it shouldn't have to... but we can't let "our" side of the greenway look like this. No wonder so few people were on it and Derby's was packed!

Its so sad to see such a mess. Now lets hope someone will clean it up.maybe the city needs to install a few video cameras to see whos around with dogs or not and leaving the mess behind. Its ashame to have such a mess left behind..

So sad video cameras would be needed on the Ansonia side but not Derby. I have to wonder if it was wise to even build the Ansonia greenway if it only had funds for run a short distance. It really is a short strip that runs by a landfill and ends near a rusty railroad bridge. Where was it supposed to end? Are there plans to "complete" it? It invites trash and neglect as is.

At least the Derby/Shelton end GOES SOMEWHERE.

Very sad to read this. I occasionally take my dog for a walk there and always carry bags to clean up after him. If I saw someone not cleaning up after their dog I would say something. People like that ruin it for all.

I have asked the Mayor's Office to alert Public Works. I haven't been there in awhile because my dog overheats easily. Feel free to notify Public Works directly for any future concerns. It will expedite the process. Thx.

Also- Bidding for the next phase (crossing over the railroad tracks) of the Riverwalk goes out next week. Eventually, path will continue onto Pershing, Bridge St, West Main past Target and then up along the opposite river bank, then onto Main, over Division St bridge, back to beginning. It will be a big loop.

Pat, Are their any signs posted on the walk stating a penalty for people who don't clean up? That might help a bit.

I find this unbelievable since we jogged the path with our two dogs the entire summer. The only dodging we did was the geese poo. Bag are provided at top of trail. All walkers I saw were very tidy. Is this writer sure of it was D O G poo? It has been so sterile that I thought to approach Ansonia for stats to go to Derby with and request do a trial weekend open dog session there. Thoughts?

Magomama, I was there last Saturday and there was dog poop EVERYWHERE. Derby's site spotless. If it were any other animal it wouldn't just be on the walkway and that animal would not select to poop in Ansonia yet not in Derby.

Also, thank you Pat.. it's good to hear the overall plan. The current "dead end river walk" is almost always empty while the Derby site is quite active.

I walk Ansonia riverwalk every day april-sept. i've Never encountered dog mess. please note the "dog poop" in question is actually Canadian geese droppings, and it is spotty at best, not widespread. Ansonia's river side contains more grass acreage (including former dump hill now grass covered) and the river traditionally flows lower compared to derby's side -- this attracts wildlife liking to feed in shallow waters, and therefore, ansonia attracts the wild geese. yes, there is spotty trash throughout the riverside stones along with tires exposed in river when water level is low, perhaps a community cleanup can be organized to correct this.

Maybe ansonia needs to follow derby and not allow pets on the walk way...it is sad

They are lucky to get anyone to walk there. It goes nowhere. I have not seen dog poop there and hopefully can continue to walk my dog there. Other towns have trails to walk their dogs. Can't punish everyone for a few people that don't follow rules. I see people in my neighborhood that do the same thing. Let the dog on private property and not picking up. Makes me mad. Your dog is not my responsibility. If I can pick up after my dog then you you can bend over and pick up after yours. Otherwise get a cat

It's for the D O G S~ My foster siberian husky's happy nature there could better relay this than I. Who cares how short, how long.....it's available and thank GOD because D e r b y made a hasty decision and rip off the taxpayers with a puny park. People have options everywhere like Osborndale, Paugausset, yada yada. The dogs do not. And we never saw the dog poop and I would have picked it up. Sometimes the bags were not available. But all in all, it was such a great exercise for my galloping horse aka huskey!~

I walk there year round and have not noticed a significant problem. I think the city and users do a good job with it. Happy to hear it will get even better/longer.

Just walked there on Tuesday and it was very clean!!! Have gone by many times and have seen Public works there cleaning up!! They really shouldn't have to clean up after the dogs....the owners should!!! Lots of geese dropping!!! But what can you do about that!!! I enjoy the walkway and so does my dog!!! PS... I clean up after my dog!!!!

I use the Riverwalk frequently to walk with my dog. I rarely if ever see dog droppings and clean them up when I do. I often see goose droppings though which can be mistaken for dog droppings.Public Works does a terrific job in keeping the Riverwalk maintained.The Derby Shelton walk isn't as pristine as you describe. I see trash along there from time to time. I think we all need to relax a bit and just appreciate what we have available to us and stop finding things to complain about. Channel that negativity into something good. Step up and do something about. Volunteer to clean up. Organize a river clean up.

My taxes pay to keep the Ansonia River walk spotless. They certainly are not going to road maintenance, etc.

I have neighbors that say the same thing when they mow the lawn and leave a mess in the street with cuttings. They say they pay taxes to clean the street. Then complain when taxes go up. In the meantime the street looks terrible. We can all do our part in cleaning up after ourselves. Helps your city clean and desirable. Be proud and do your part

A "Riverwalk" in Ansonia that will LEAVE the river and go to Pershing Drive and down Main?!

Could it not have somehow crossed the river, remained behind Target, the train station, etc and at least been near the river and long enough to be enjoyable and not send people down city streets? Not exactly a scenic stroll.
