The City of Virginia Beach has resolved this issue

This was caused by an inadequate drainage system from the Church Point retention pond. It was flooding from the pond, through our yards, garages to the street that was the problem. The same thing happened in Church Point cul de sacs.

This issue has been closed due to work being completed.

I'd like to add to this discussion and echo the request that the larger issue please get looked into. I live nearby at the intersection of Maycraft Rd and Curtiss Dr and the same backup of water has affected me 4 times in 5 years as major flooding events. I've had 5.5', 2.5', 4', and 2' of water in my backyard at the deepest point (and water in my crawl space twice). We've lost over $7,000 in damages to our house (major cost is crawl space duct work being saturated). None of these events have been during hurricanes - just rainstorms that have hung around. Any information would be very helpful. For example, who is the best person to talk to about what should my expectations be for storm water drainage? Are all 4 events considered 1 in 100 year storms or how is that defined? If pictures or videos of all events are helpful, I'm happy to post (attached is my backyard during the July 31 event). The most recent event was Aug 19. The water flows down Curtiss Dr, tries to go down the drain at the front of my yard, quickly overwhelms that, flows through my backyard and the yards of those mentioned above in Thoroughgood, then into the houses in Church Point referenced in Issue # 2750628, and then flowing to the pond near Pleasure House Rd, overwhelming the small drains that are also referenced in Issue # 2750628. I've been told by public works employees to be sure to call during an event so a vacuum truck can be sent out to help with the water flow. I called during the Aug 19 event and spoke to someone that created an Issue # but never saw a person or a truck. Daniel Jones has been out (after the July 31 event) and confirmed our drain lines are clean and yet this happened after they were deemed clean so I don't think that is the issue. Thank you very much for looking into this and letting me know what can be done.

This neighborhood is described as a pre-70s neighborhood. This neighborhood and others were built before the City adopted minimum standards for storm drain systems. The storm drain system that is in place was designed for a 2 year+/- storm. Systems built now are designed for a 10 year storm. Storms are rated on the amount of rainfall and the duration in which it fell. The July 31st storm was a 1000 year event and the August 19th event was a 50 year storm. Both storms exceed what we design to now. Public Works/Operations will maintain the existing pipe/ditch drainage system to ensure it is operating as designed. There are currently no plans to upgrade this system.

That is an unacceptable and irresponsible response to this problem from the City of Virginia Beach! Obviously, the existing system needs to be updated. The engineers working for the City of VB need to solve this problem and not discard it as a 1000 year storm. It happened twice in one month. Please reopen this and solve the problem. There are many other area in Thoroughgood that are having similar issues. I live on Country Club Circle and this is unacceptable.

I agree. The city is telling me that everything is fine near us on country club circle. I open up a manhole that outfalls to the lake and find a caved pipe on the upstream side and a fence post driven right through the pipe on the other end. They aren't even operating on a 2 year efficiency when they are so poorly maintained. Why is the city unwilling to at least TV the lines and find out why they aren't draining?!?

You are invited to please contact City Council members (call/email addresses are listed on vb.gov) by this week to request that storm water drainage be the budget priority.

There's also a Facebook page you can like called Stop the Flooding Now (rather than in 10 more years). Princess Anne Plaza has similar problem. We need to come together addressing City Council before they spend our $ on something else.
